marty621 Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 Does anyone go through the effort of returning to a cache they set several times during the day, or several days in order to get a better average on the coordinates? So far I have just done a GPS average for the time it takes me to prepare and hide the cache, and most everyone reports my coordinates are good. I really hate to hunt for a cache where the coordinates are not precise ( or is it accurate?) so I take care to get them as best I can when I set a cache. Quote
+Treasure Hunters Inc. Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 We have gone back to recheck a cache's waypoint if/when early hunters indicate a no-find or that they found the cache 50 to 100 feet from where their GPSr said it was. But I always use 100 to 200 averaged waypoints when I place a cache, depending on the number of sats locked at the time. I have only had to correct the numbers for one of our caches so far. $1000 Bill geocaching is living in a 30 foot circle Quote
+ron50eli Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 i use two gps's, mine a garmin V, and rockers a garmin48. we let them sit still where cache will be placed and let them settle down and then take the difference between the two. seems to work for us, no complaints.....yet Happy and safe caching ron Quote
+brad.32 Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 Accuracy refers to correctness. Precision is repeatability and uniformity. A measurement can be precise, but still be wrong over and over again. Quote
+LaPaglia Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 nevermind, I made a smarta$$ comment before I completly read the thread.Boy was I looking stupid Quote
+SceneryGuy Posted March 11, 2003 Posted March 11, 2003 I have place two caches. I don't have waypoint averaging on my eTrex Legend, so I walk back to the cache site about 10-12 times, then go back on a completely different day and take 2-3 more. Then I plot them in MapSource and look at the groupings. There will be three or four wildcards about 50' away, but I pick one in the middle of the group. Seems to work okay. So, theoretically, I could be precisely wrong in both cases! "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous!" Quote
