Darkmoon Posted December 29, 2002 Posted December 29, 2002 I helped a friend take a tree out of his yard and after using the chainsaw, we had quite a few logs that would sit upright....and it got me to thinking...how about sawing the tops of as a lid and hollowing it out to hide the cache...a couple of dowels would act as locating lugs for the lid and you could put them in the woods and not worry about kids booting the cache...of course you would have to leave some obvious clue for fellow geo cachers...anyway just a thought as i brought the trunks home with me...wait tell my wife sees this! +Criminal Posted December 29, 2002 Posted December 29, 2002 I like it, but sounds like a lot of work. Quote
GEO*Trailblazer 1 Posted December 29, 2002 Posted December 29, 2002 I used mine for a raised bed garden spots. I filled the hollow stumps with good soil and plant my veggie's.I have thought of and use natural hollow's in tree's too. When all else fails Geotry again. Quote

Zartimus Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 We have one here where the stump has been hollowed out from the bottom, the top has been left undisturbed, and a plastic container has been expoxied inside. You flip it over to get inside it. I've heard stories of cachers setting their bags on it, sitting on it, etc, before realizing afterwards that it was the cache.. Quote
Squirrel Nut & Beersnob Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 Ok, this is (currently) fairly 'local', but I thought I should give a 'heads-up'. For the safety of all our ash trees, please avoid moving ash wood. In several counties around Detroit, MI and an area around Windsor Canada, Ash trees have been invaded by the Emerald Ash Borer. The impact of this insect on Ash trees has been compared to Dutch Elm disease in it's seriousness. Ash trees are dieing by the thousands, and a ban of movement of ash trees and ash wood out of several Michigan counties has been enacted. Currently, the problem has only been identified in the Detroit/Windsor area, but it may have already spread to other areas. It's believed to have come aboard an international ship, so it's possible other major ports on the Great Lakes could be infected as well. +Team Golden Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 I am guessing that the area it is placed in is critical so it matches the surroundings! There are a few here but not stumps. They are more like small logs that have been bored out. I like the last post. This has me thinking of a few ideas.... Quote
Darkmoon Posted December 30, 2002 Author Posted December 30, 2002 I am going into the shop tonight and start working on one...i will keep you all posted on it and may even take some pics...as far as a stump, i was thinking it wouldn't attract to much attention if some locals came across it but a geo cacher might relize how odd that a trunk is in the forest...always keep your eyes open for unexplained things... +Jennifer&Dean Posted December 30, 2002 Posted December 30, 2002 No matter what I try to write here, I give away someone's cache idea. I give up. Check out niskibum's caches in Post Falls and Coeur D'Alene Idaho for some other ideas that will have you wandering for hours. I still am amazed at his creativity. -Jennifer Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else. (JM Barrie) Quote
