Username change info

First of all, I know HOW to change my username. The questions I have deal with AFTER I have changed it. I hope someone can help.

Thanks. Al

Q #1 If I change my user name, how do I get my cache count with my old user name to follow me to my new name.

Q #2 Once I change my user name, will log entries I have made on line automatically change the username in the entries, or must I go back and edit these individually?

This is just an educated guess - I don't have anything to do with the programming of the GC site...

Your actual userid on the GC site is a unique (probably numeric) ID that you never see. When you change your username, you're just changing an attribute that's associated with that "private" ID. Other attributes would be your forum signature, the picture you choose to display on your profile, your password, etc. Changing your username doesn't change your identity as far as the back-end of the GC site goes. Your finds, forum posts, etc. remain associated with your account. I could be wrong about the forum posts since they use Infopop, but on the GC site, I'm sure that's how it goes.

The reason the logs on the cache pages don't update instantly is because each page is generated only when a log entry is made. If nobody creates a log entry, the username won't update (hence the archived caches not updating). This is the same reason that your find count doesn't update instantly on your previous logs when you log another find.

Yep, unique numeric ID. Take a look at the URL for my profile:

http://www.geocaching.com/profile/default.aspx?A=12056

Notice the "A=12056" at the end? 12056 is my unique ID number. I'm guessing that I'm the 12,056th registered account on the site. #s 2 and 3 are two of Jeremy's accounts.

The highest number at the moment is 159759. That's a lot of accounts. It looks like they're getting a thousand or so new accounts about every three days. That's pretty rapid growth. Let's hope that a good percentage of them subscribe. icon_wink.gif

Yes, accounts 2 and 3 are Jeremy's. There is no account 1, and just where did you get the number 1000 every 3 days? That is a big leap...

Hmm... let's look at the numbers for a minute. The oldest cache is GC4. It's oldest log is dated 27 Aug 2000. Today is 15 Sep 2003. That makes 1114 days between then and now. There are at this moment 159759 users listed online right now.... Hmmmm.... That makes 143.41 new cachers a day on average.... AND, let me see... I think that 143.41*3 is no where near 1000 new accounts. At best the average = 430.23.

Care to try again with your wild assumptions?

Well, aren't we the math wizard?

I never mentioned averages. Considering the fact that the growth the activity has experienced has been rather non-linear, using the average growth to predict future growth would be pretty silly. I was using current data. Specifically, I was using the time during which the last several thousand accounts were registered.

I'll make it nice and easy for you, since you weren't thorough enough to do your own research before publicly firing off your flame.

Maybe next time you'll consider that perhaps the person you're about to insult in fact does know what they were talking about, and that you're the one who's missing something.

Thanks for all the help.. I guess I got a bit more info than I actually needed, But part of this sport is to be amused isn't it, to have fun with it? Well, I'm having a great time geocaching.

What do they say... Amused easily, and easily amused.

It works for me.

Anyway, thanks for the posts to my initial query. I have everything worked out.
