Team Hooligan Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 This may have been discussed before, but I wondering how important you think 1st finds are? If I'm not crazy, am I sane? Quote
welch Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 The first couple visitors are important in that they help work out any placement problems. Not to bring down those that like to be the first finders, but I think being first is often a matter of lucky timing, more than anything else. Quote
Logscaler and Red Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 I Think first finds are important only in the fact that it let's others know the cache is really there. But, not important enough to put on your cache page. But it is nice to have a FRIENDLY competition with some others to see who can grab the first finds first. logscaler. Quote
georgeandmary Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 Not so much any more. My main FTF competition has pretty muched retired from geocaching so some of the thrill is gone. george Pedal until your legs cramp up and then pedal some more. Quote
Renegade Knight Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 I've actually found myself holding back so others could be first finders. After moving from a very active are to a less active area, this is kind of strange. Wherever you go there you are. Quote
TeamJiffy Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 ...there is not much hope for first finders around here, with this lucky dog in our area! ...so we've learned to cherish our very few first finds, as we know they'll be rare. Quote
CYBret Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 I enjoy it when it happens, but I seldom go out of my way to be the first. I did create an icon on my profile page for the first finds I've managed to get (feel free to steal it if you want). Bret "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. +Mudfrog Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 We like to be first finders with caches in our area, but this is because of the friendly competition that we have. There are at least 4 other couples/teams that get out quick and this just makes GeoCaching even more fun for everyone! Just went back to vote but saw that there really wasnt a category for us. Weve had several where we wanted to be first but its not something we strive for all the time. I dont think it should make any difference in stats at all! Quote
Aladin Sane Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 I do like to get a first find now and then. I find that with my busy travel schedule, I don't get as many as I used to. The local cache activity level has been increasing, and you can't wait till the weekend and expect to be first. The increased activity is good though. There are more caches to find. I did once get first finds in Michigan and Iowa on the same day. I thougt that was sort of cool. Aladin Sane Quote
travisl Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 I'd love to be able to see first find stats. I've no clue how many I actually have, but I'd love to be able to find out easily. "I'm sure she would have been thrilled to find so much pooh in a little metal box." Quote
Bloencustoms Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 If it pops up, and there is time to get some people together, we'll go after one. But, there is definitely an advantage to letting others work out the kinks first. I wasn't sure how to vote. If there was a selection "sometimes yes sometimes no" I'd cast my vote. It's nice to be first AND it's reassuring to see other hunts went smoothly. Don't even think about putting those muddy boots in my car. Quote
Kevin & Susan Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 Only important when you get $1000 for it...;~) Quote
Capt. Jack & 1st Mate Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 But not as such a driving force as it used to be. Well, maybe 1st Mate likes 1st finders a little more than I. In our small community there has been a little competition on 1st finds for a few of us that know one another, but in a friendly way. As far as letting someone else work out the bugs, I would rather be the 1st to do that as it might add a little more of a challenge and perhaps it may be harder to find due to someone not hiding the cache as well as the owners or previous finders. Yeah, okay, I guess I do like being 1st finders after all. CJ Quote
LetterCarrier37 Posted February 23, 2003 Posted February 23, 2003 I have not found one yet but I have a few out, but the first one would be special, and to find one first would be very special Quote
The Cheeseheads Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 I took the final option. It seems that no matter how soon I make it out to a cache, I'm always the last finder. I sure wouldn't want that to appear on my stats page of people might know what a loser I am... - - - - - Wisconsin Geocaching Association Quote
Ozarktroutbum Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 But I'm not in a rush to do it. When GPSr's are outlawed, only Outlaws will have GPSr's. Quote
bitbrain Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 If I have the feeling that one of the other guys around here is going to try to make the First Find on a cache that looks interesting, I'll usually try for it. Especially if it's right in someone's neighborhood. Other than that, I just find them in their own time. Quote
evergreenhiker! Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 I like FTFs especially ones that are deep in the mountains. They are not as important to me as they were when I first started out though...I remember the elation of my first FTF: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=3441 I celebrated my 400th find with a FTF: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=53482 We do have a lot of great cachers in my area so it can be competitive to get FTFs. Quote
david&diana Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 We also celebrated our 400th find with an FTF. GEORGIE PORGIE PUDDIN' PIE A weekend without Geocaching is like a Monday. Quote
Web-ling Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 I used to make an effort to be the first to find, but discovered that too many of them had problems like incorrect coordinates or typos in critical information. Now, I generally wait until at least one person has found a cache before I hunt. Quote
IV_Warrior Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 I keep waiting for someone to place a new cache around here so I can try to be FTF. I was out of town the weekend the most recent one was placed several weeks ago....And yes I am thinking about placing a few caches for others to find, just gotta figure out the details....ammo box already purchased, need location, and we keep getting more and more SNOW.....which I'm sure is what's keeping others from placing a new cache around here right now... I'm lost. I've gone to find myself. If I should happen to get back before I return, please ask me to wait. Quote
sbell111 Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 When I first started playing the game, I would get jazzed about trying to be first finder. After a while, it became less and less important. The only time it really interests me now is if others have tried and failed or if it is an out-of-town cache. I see that the sock puppet is back. Quote
Team Tecmage Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 We used to break our butts to be first finders, now we've slowed down. It is still a thrill to be first finder, but life is slowing down our activity. Quote
Rygel Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 I thinking getting to the cache after the last guy/girl put something really cool in is more important! +Team GPSaxophone Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 Our only first find came last week when we just happened to be driving I-8 in So.Cal a few days after a new cache was placed. Quote
CYBret Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 I think the last time I TRIED to be a first finder I was third for the day....apparently everyone else got off work before me, and I left early just to hit it. Oh well . . it's not like the big one that got away. Bret "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again." Mt. 13:44 Quote
ron50eli Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 I only want to be first if there is an item in it I'm collecting. Quote
