Cheap Cellular Phones

Recommended Posts

Hi US

I've posted this request before but unfortunately I've since lost the details....

I'm visiting the US (California and Nevada specifically) for a 3 weeks of touring at the end of this month, and want to buy a cheap cellular phone when I get there which i can use for calling ahead to hotels, ordering pizzas, emergencies, etc...

I had a couple of good responses last time i posted this question which referred to a pre-paid phone analogue phone that was quite cheap and had coverage for California and Nevada. Alas, as I've said, I've since lost the details and I'm hoping someone can provide them for me.

Thanks in advance

Alan

I can see how it might be related, and honored that you came to us first.

I live in Southern California and I use Cingular Wireless, formerly Pac Bell. There are Cingular stores on every corner and a kiosk at every mall. I use a traditional phone with the year contract and the minutes etc. But, I see that they also sell prepaid minutes for the phones, so if you are only here for a short time, maybe that is the solution for you. I would walk into one of their stores and see what they have to offer. I have been a customer of theirs for about 4 years in LA and have always had good luck with reception etc.

Thanks Dru and Welch

I think I posted the original question around March or April time, and yes i did use a different name, probably 'Tom Sawyer' I think. I changed to Ball Bouncer as for whatever reason the forum would no longer allow me to sign in with that name.

I should have added that I will be hunting for caches during my travels icon_smile.gif Might need a phone for when I get lost!

You can check into the Trac phone system. You buy the phone (Walmart or places like that) and a phone card for the number of minutes you might need. When it comes down to it, the minutes are probably somewhat expensive, but for a short time use, it might be worth it. When you are done, leave the phone in a cache for a super prize!

If you're going to be hiking outside the cities and expect the phone to work, you'll need analog. CDMA, GSM, and TDMA coverage are mostly found in the main arteries of people. No carrier has complete coverage but in the Bay Area I've had decent luck with SprintPCS (five years now).

There have been too many changes in carriers names since I bought my first phone to know what the best is around here but I'm pretty sure that AT&T has a pre-pay plan, as does Verizon.

Look into the possibility of renting a phone while you're here and getting a calling card for outgoing calls made from the hotel/friends landline...

Google-groups is your friend when it comes to this sort of thing..

If you do you may want to see if it can be changed to the zone you will be in temporarily. This can be done with most phones and would save you the cost of a new phone, and expensive pay as you go minutes. I don't know if this applies to your situation but it may be worth checking on.

I have a national plan on Verizon Wireless @ $35/month for 300 anytime minutes. It is pricey, but I use my cellphone exclusively for long distance calls, When around the house, and I avoid using my home phone for the long distance calling. This plan includes free roaming and long distance.

300 minutes of long distance on your home phone at 10 cents per minute is $30. Now if you use your cellphone for most of your long distance calling, it is worth it to have a cell phone.

A home phone should be used mainly for local calls, since people can run up big bills. This is also an exercise on keeping calls at a minimum, like within 300 minutes a month.

So a cellphone with a good calling plan maybe better than using your homephone, and running up your expenses on that cordless phone of yours.

Does that make sense? Avoiding unnecessary toll charges on the homephone, and calling on your cellphone???
