Will this replace the GPSV

I sure don't think that would replace the V but it looks pretty nice. I'll have to keep my eye on that one.

So far so good, somewhat new owner of a second/new Garmin GPS V 20 plus finds so far with little to no problem. We'll see what happens when there are leaves on the trees again.

I already have a GPS V, a Palm Vx, and a digital voice recorder that I use for caching and work, so it doesn't offer anything new; in fact the antenna may not even be as good.

Here's what it would take to win me over:

  • ability to use "other brands" mapping software with the GPS function (or greatly improve quality and reduce price of current Garmin offerings)
  • ability to load maps on generic mmc cards via usb (this would allow fast and virtually unlimited map storage for long road trips)
  • ability to augment GPS signal with ground-based signals at least in high-rise metropolitan areas (to eliminate blind spots in the concrete canyons of Hong Kong, New York, Chicago, etc.)
  • and of course all the functions currently available on the GPS V (except the stupid games and calendar)

I won't hold my breath while I'm waiting for these enhancements. icon_wink.gif

I can see it replacing a streetpilot, but not the GSP5.

It looks like something I would break in the woods. It looks no more durable than a palm. I would trip and crack there goes the antenna, or the screen.

Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.

I was looking at external gpsr add-ons (palm os) for my current pda but none of them impressed me as much with the ability to do turn-by-turn routing which is important to me since I drive quite a bit for work. It also has a lot of internal memory (16 megs) which is needed to handle the street level map info. I already carry too many gadgets in my purse...pda, digital camera, cell phone, gpsr, etc. I definately am buying the iQue April 1st when it's released. It will replace my gpsr and pda lightening my load. As for tripping in the woods and breaking it, I haven't tripped in the woods yet (hmm, nothing is made out of wood in my office to knock on) besides I wouldn't carry it around without a neck lanyard anyways. I'll post my thoughts after I get it and use it for a while.

I can see a lot of possible software for all-in-one-hand GPSr/PDA combos:

* Night watchman / fence maintenance / etc. proving he'd been on rounds, without having to mount punchclock tags. In this case, I'd want to 'punch' each waypoint, within a given amount of time.

* Salesman / on-site service: Here, I'd want to link contacts in my address with appointments with physical locations, and track mileage

* Exercise / training programs: measure speed, duration of jogging/biking/skiing/skating

* Put a camera in the same unit (attached to an SD card, maybe?) and your photojournalist would love it.

There's lots more nobody's thought of, I'm sure.

Walmart has a Magellan you attach to the Palm for 50 bucks. Closeout.

So here is my take.

This device is already outdated.

For starters everything comes with 64mb of ram. Not 32mb like this one This unit is a mapping unit. It needs 128mb to start. It also needs the SD slot and a compact flash slot for expansion.

I've got a 128mb card and it's full. My GPS is separate and I don't have all the maps I'd like on the PDA. Nor do I have enough MP3's to keep me entertained at work.

Start with the features of something like the Dell Axium. Add 128mb base ram. Add in the GPS V equivilent then charge 500. After you get some solid battery life out of it. Maybe the AA expasnion pack so you can put 8 NiMH AA's in it and keep it running. Give it GPS waterproofing and GPS ruggedness. Keep it small as possible with a larger than standard screen if possible.

Then you have something.

Wherever you go there you are.

This unit utilizes a patch antenna as opposed to the V's quad antenna and external antenna capabilities.

Seems like a nice unit for corporate travelers, but not rugged enough for outdoor activities like geocaching, hiking, camping, fishing and etc. icon_wink.gif
