popups?

I haven't noticed any. You might want to check your computer to make sure that some program like Gator, iLook, or one of the other spyware things didn't sneak its way on.

My mother called me up the other day and was wondering why MSNBC was giving her pop-ups for Farm Animal Porno. Turned out to be this nasty little program called xupiter.

If it does turn out to be one of those, try the program called Ad-aware. You can download it at www.downloads.com .

well, if there is any spyware on my PC that Moosoft's The Cleaner, TrojanHunter, Ad-Aware 6.0, PopUp Stopper, and my built-in add suppression can get through, then it can stay there. As a computer technicial, I have a full 700mb CD full of anti-spy/ad ware software.

No popups here either but then again I don't visit all of those porn sites that you do TJW. icon_biggrin.gificon_wink.gificon_razz.gif

All I've ever used has been ad-aware and have had no problem, even when I run it, it may find one or two things at best and those are usually cookies. I run a clean machine but my question is with all of those other apps do you find that they pickup stuff that add-aware doesn't?

Pro's/Con's for either?

Give you my addy, can you burn and ship a copy?

all of the programs I have are freely available online, search download.com.

As for other open windows, I only run at mots 1 browser at a time, and the popup blocker I use has never failed to stop all popups. I ran a scan with AdAware (3 hard drives, took over an hour), and it turns out that a program I installed a few weeks ago had hidden adware. That's what was causing it.

UMC: for a perfectly clean system, I use AdAware 6, Moosoft's TheCleaner (may no longer be available, not sure), TrojanHunter, and PopUp Stopper. I run adAware tewice a day, TrojanHunter once a day, and The Cleaner twice a day.

Wow! You ran Adaware 20-30 times then before it found the spyware, and all those other programs missed it totally. I guess they don't work as good as people think, huh? Thanks for that heads up TJ!

BHO Cop is another very handy utility. It checks for Browser Helper Objects (the Yahoo! and Google toolbars are examples) and allows you to disable them. It's a ZDnet download. Their downloads used to be free but now they're charging a small fee to download any of their utilities.

Mopar: most adware in programs do not activate until the program is run, which I did last night for the first time. The program was supposed to be a memory manager for the computers RAM, but after running it, and realizing that all it did was randomly generate numbers, I deleted it, leaving the adware behind.

Maybe your spyware rats nest is making a popup to thank you for using their software?

Oh silly me. I thought they showed up when you INSTALLED them. Thank you so much for contributing your years of computer knowledge to help out the newbies like me.

a good many do. Most of the ones I've found don't run untill the program runs for the first time.

I've tried the Opera browser, and Mozilla for Windows. I also used both in Linux, and didn't like either browser in either OS. With the protection that I have implemented, stuff rarely squeake by, unless hidden in software.

See Jeremy's posts to this thread, which I found after searching on the term "popup". Paraphrasing Jeremy, he would shut the site down before he'd resort to popup ads. I believe him, and don't feel a need to ask him again. The lack of annoying popup ads is part of what makes this site such an enjoyable place.

I've installed Spybot on my computer, but haven't used it to it's full capability yet....so far I've seen that it catches some things that AdAware does not, but the other way is true as well. I haven't found Spybot to work well finding anything but applications and reg keys....cookies seem to slip by it rather easily (unless there's some setting I haven't hunted for yet). icon_smile.gif

Truthfully, if I had to run spy-ware detectors more than once per week, I'd probably just turn off my computer and force myself to stay outside for a couple days...if you really need your computer to be that clean, maybe you need a new hobby (or job) icon_wink.gif

TJ, maybe if you didn't install so much crap on your computer you wouldn't need all those security apps.

Might want to think about downsizing - or get a second computer to try out all the kewl hakz from download.com.

Dang... not a single piece of adware/spyware/trojanhunter/etc type blocking software... on any of my puters in 10+ years and I still have no problem with pop-ups. Plus I have lots of system resource that is not being wasted by adware/spyware/trojanhunter/etc type blocking software... I must just live a good life icon_smile.gif

I remember years ago while working at a hospital (I worked law enformcement there), that a maintenance man asked me about getting a computer. Matter of fact I seemed to be the guru there, which is sad in itself. I guess they were all just not familiar with computers. Anyway this guy ended up buying a computer and got hooked on the internet. While making my rounds one night I saw him and another person in their office and popped in to chat for a while. He was telling me how neat the internet was and the search engines. Said "just for fun" that he typed in the word "sex" in the search engine and was given hundreds of thousands of links to websites. Said he went to some of them to see what they were, but they kept asking him for his credit card number. I told him not to do it even if they said it was for verification of age purposes. He said oh no he wouldn't do that. Uhhh, yeah right.... Anyway, about a month or so down the road, I saw him again. I said hey hows the computer going? Said it was great but he had another question for me. He said he gets all these pop ups for sex sites whenever he logs on or boots the computer (can't remember how he put it). Said that he wanted them off his computer because his grandchildren like to play games on his computer when they come over. I told him some things to try. Later asked him they worked and they did. This was over 3 or 4 years ago and the technology that they use now for these pop ups are more advance than then.

But, on the question of those pop ups that he was receiving, how do you think he was getting them? icon_wink.gif

When you go to a site, pop ups are annoying. Companies like AOL have a pop up blocker in their software, but is only good if you are using their browser. I don't use their browser, so it's no good to me. I prefer the pop unders instead. The ones I really detest are the ones that get big, the size of the screen, with no "close" button on them. Then you have to go out of your way to close it.

If you press Alt-F4, the active window will be closed. If you do it fast enough, you can close the window before it loads the page - and the javascript which will open a window when you close that one, starting the process all over again...

On popup blockers, AdSubtract is far and away the best one I've tried. I can't tell you how happy I am with it... Since I've installed it less than a year ago it's blocked:

35891 ads

27507 cookies

50583 javascripts

It's fully customizable so you can block cookies from one site, javascript on another, etc. http://www.adsubtract.com/

I use Free Surfer mk II and it seems to do a pretty good job. You can have your computer speaker make a small beep (which you can also turn off) when it blocks a pop-up. This is nice because every now and then a web site will use a pop up for a feature of their website that you need. You just press the control key and hit reload and the popup will come up.

The best thing though is the program is free.
