+AT Section Hikers Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 I know this sounds stoopid but I can't find ammo cans for sale at the Groundspeak store anymore. I swear I saw them for sale on-line before. Can anyone help me out with where to find them on-line for the best price? Danke! Quote
+DapperDanMan Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 Look up Army Surplus Store in your phonebook if you want to find them locally. Usually all these type of stores have them but the prices vary. The stores closest to me are quite inexpensive but one store about 25 miles away sells them really cheap so you will want to shop around. Quote
+briansnat Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 I've seen them everywhere from $2 at flea markets to $12 in a hardware store. Cheaperthandirt has the best prices I've found on the Internet. $3.99 for the .50 cal and 6 .30 cal for $19 "Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Some other stuff too but I don't remember what else.... "Trade up, trade even, or don't trade!!!" My philosophy of life. Quote
+Doc-Dean Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 Does anyone use them for ammo anymore?? --------------------------------------------------- Free your mind and the rest will follow Quote
+Woodbutcher68 Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 Does anyone use them for ammo anymore?? Only in Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan...etc. Maps?!? I don't need no stinking maps! I got coordinates! There's a fine line between Geocaching and mental illness, I just not sure which side of the line I'm on! Quote
+Brainerd Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 How good of condition are the ammo cans from cheaperthandirt? Lotsa rust or not bad? Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau Quote

+ChrisCindy Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 One of the local places here in Memphis sells em for $3.00 each. They also have the BIG 120mm mortar for $4.99 each which is an awsome price if you want to spend the money filling it. When in doubt...hit it with a big hammer. Quote
+M-Class Posted August 16, 2003 Posted August 16, 2003 I did the Cheaper than Dirt cans... they arrive in ok condition (not very rusty at all, but definately dusty and need a good rinse before use). Next time I'll probably try a local place instead. Oh, and Cheaper Than Dirt does sell their mailing list... within weeks I got dozens of catalogs for swords, knives, guns, tools, and even a petition from the NRA as a result. I have nothing against guns and I do agree with the 2nd ammendment, but I am not a gun owner nor do I plan to be, so it was kinda funny to open an envelope and read 'Dear Gun Owner' LOL! Quote

I've found that you can clean them out, then after making sure they are dry, spray them inside and out with spray laquer. Use a couple of coats. Let it dry for overnight (a few days if you have the time) and the inside will remain in great condition. I bought one at a local store that was rusty and had some water in it. It was the last one and I needed one in a bad way for a local newspaper story. I used the above method and some great paint first. Still looks new inside. -beatnik- Quote
