+Frolickin
A beta version of the Meridian firmware update 4.06 is available from the Yahoo group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/ There's little word on exactly the improvements over 4.02, but it signals that Magellan understands 4.02 was not perfect. +alexm
quote:A beta version of the Meridian firmware update 4.06 is available from the Yahoo group. Just a quick public service announcement- Keep in mind that this "beta" is not officially released by Magellan yet. You should apply and use it only at your own risk. Actually, there's absolutely nothing that shows that this release actually came from Magellan and that it isn't some person's project of hunting up and chaning the version number and placing the rest of the .HEX into a blender to mix up the bytes. Just be careful out there! Quote Link to comment
+Stunod
I installed it and haven't seen any MAJOR improvements. The "scattered" tracklines seem to be fixed, though. "Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand." Quote Link to comment
+The Commissar!
I tried it. Its been running two days with no problems. Seems to grab sats quicker than the 3.08 version I replaced...the 3.12 upgrade sent my last unit to Magellan Heaven(or Hell, not sure which) Quote Link to comment

Fro. I installed it today with no problems. Picks up sats faster and the chickens feet track is gone. Remember to do a Clear All after you load the new version, and initialize the unit a second time. ________________________________________ Quote Link to comment
+embra
I put 4.06 on a day or two ago. No problems seen so far (but I didn't have any problem with 4.02, either). Max Often wrong but seldom in doubt Quote Link to comment

Just be careful out there! Alexm is correct about being careful. I just received my MeriPlat from Magellan service. The enclosed note said: quote: Repaired your unit by sodering the battery holder springs into place inside the unit and uploaded the latest software. Please enjoy the free accessories. I found my unit had batteries, 4.06 of the firmware, an additional RS-232 cable, a cigarette power cable, and a case. Nice going! Quote Link to comment
+infosponge
Please be careful and note that the file on the Yahoo site is not for the Meridian GPS (MeriGreen/Yellow). It's just for the Gold/Platinum/Marine models. I hope there's a formal release of 4.06 soon, since my MeriGreen is as flakey as a snowman under 4.02. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com Quote Link to comment
+Stunod
It seems firmware version 4.06 hijacked my computer and sent pornographic spam e-mail to everyone on my contacts list!! Just kidding... Still working great for me. Please report any problems/bugs that you find. "Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand." Quote Link to comment
+infosponge
I've reported it until I'm blue in the face. All Magellan will say is that I must not have upgraded right...you know...all the 50 times I've tried and followed the instructions EXACTLY must have been wrong. Jerks... http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com Quote Link to comment

Botkeeper, Was that the end-all solution to the spontaneous power-down problem? (I still haven't seen mine do it again) Thanks, alex Quote Link to comment
TeamGatorade
I didn't really notice much wrong with my Meridian gold when I first got it, but noticed there was an update (4.02) available so I loaded it. After that it seemed like my gold took longer to acquire position fixes; had trouble holding satelites and seem to loose the signal more. I now get strange satellite displays. It will show 3, 4, sometimes 5 or more full hollow bars, indicating it is acquiring data from those satellites, and the signal is strong enought that I have full bars. Then all of a sudden, the satellites all disappear, but the bars, which have turned solid black now, are still there at full strength. Where are the satellites? Seems to me there is some timing and sync issues with this 4.02 code. Anyone else have or notice the same indications? I actually took the first gold back because I thought it was faulty, but after loading the code in the second one, and it doing the same thing, I guess there is nothing wrong with the gpsr, it's probably a software code problem. +infosponge
The problem is with the 4.02 firmware, no matter what Magellan will tell you. There is an unofficial 4.06 floating around on yahoo, but it's only for the gold/plat. Those that have tried it seem to be having better luck. Too bad there's no Merigreen version yet. My GPS is darn near worthless right now. http://www.tampabaygeocaching.com Quote Link to comment
Ed2002
You could go back to firmware Version 3.12 if you think 4.02 is making the problems. If you did not keep a copy you can get it here http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/files/mgold312.zip Ed Quote Link to comment
Ed2002
Sorry, i gave the wrong file link for the MeriGreen http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/files/mgps_312.zip Ed Quote Link to comment
+GOT GPS?
Seems like my MeriPlat is working great, as far as the satellite screen is indicating. I do have Vers. 4.02 on it now. These problems that you are talking about are also on the Meridian discussion board on Yahoo Groups. Ive got to do some caching with the MeriPlat, to see if I can find any of these problems. GPS units are not perfect, even My GPS V is giving me problems because of loose battery problems. ------------------------ My home page about GPS units and information Quote Link to comment

Please enjoy the free accessories. Was that the end-all solution to the spontaneous power-down problem? (I still haven't seen mine do it again) Nope. I took the unit for a walk and experienced two shutdowns witin the first 1000 ft. I tried more combinations and I have what appears to be a thermal (cold) problem: the unit shuts down when taken from a warm pocket into cold air (though I was still within the operating temperature range). The unit did not shutdown when taking the unit from my pocket into the warm automobile air. I suspect there is a cold sodler joint or a hairline farcture on a PC board. I was very disappointed, so I called the RMA telephone and was forced to leave a number. I then called the Tulsa repair facility and also left a messages. While I would rather have talked to a real person, Magellen has been good to return calls in a timely fashion. People from the RMA department called and left a message suggesting I return the unit to where I purchased it. Couldn't do that. I was about ready to call back and complain again when a fellow from the repair facililty called who was very helpful and is shipping me a new unit with a UPS shipper to return the old unit (I already paid $11 to return the unit once). I'll be glad to get out from under this bad unit that is just over a month old and hopefully get a working new unit. I do like my MeriPlat Quote Link to comment
captclev
This is my 3rd magellan unit. First was a 2000, second a map 410 and now my Meriplat. I had very good luck with all of them. The Meriplat has the 4.02 version. No problems. If anyone is interested, magellan is offering a trade in deal. They will accept any old unit(working or not) and will give you a great deal on it. They gave me 150.00 off the cost of my meriplat when I traded in the old 2000 dinosaur. Contact magellan at 909 394 5000 and then connect with the service repair dept when prompted by the voice mail menu. They are offering great deals on their other units as well. +The Commissar!
As compared to 3.08 firmware my MeriPlat with 4.06 does a much better job of pointing at my engine (while driving) than it used to when on the compass screen set on magnetic north. Not sure if this is good or not?! Quote Link to comment
+GOT GPS?
Electronic or magnetic compasses usually have problems in the car when the engine is running. From the Menu, select Compass Orient., then select GPS Course, and North Reference to True North when driving. Don't use electronic compass near metal, because that will throw it off. ------------------------ My home page about GPS units and information Quote Link to comment
