Help with Mapsource

I have copied the East and West folders of Mapsource Topo to the Mapsource Directory but Mapsource still wants to read information from the CD. Is there a setting where Mapsource will get information from the harddrive instead of the CD ROM?

I think that Garmin has set the software to read off of the CD so that you can't load it and loan it! Kind of inconvenient.

It's fully possible to run MapSource from the hard drive alone without needing the CD in the drive. The easiest & safest way to do this is to copy the entire MapSource CD to the hard drive in it's own folder, then run the setup program from this folder (NOT setup from the CD). If you're good with dabbling in the Windows registry, the same can also be accomplished.

open it and search for Garmin.

 

Open (east) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREGarminMapSourceProducts6

and (west)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREGarminMapSourceProducts7

and (hawaii) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREGarminMapSourceProducts8

and (alsaka)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREGarminMapSourceProducts9

 

and change the values for bmap, loc and tdb to point to the directory that you have the files stored in on your hard drive.

 

Hope this helps. It worked for me with Metroguide, R&R and Topo.

The best part of operating from your hard drive is that you can open as many copies of the program at the same time as you want especially using let's say Topo and Roads and Recreation. Just go to the "view Map" pull down and select one on one and another on the second. Or just switch from topo to R+R back and forth on the same file.

 

I only wish I had enough space on my harddrive to copy NG Topo's 10 CD's for the Northest!!

Can this be done with other programs that require a run disk? I use Streets & Trips extensively to plan my caching trips and I just hate having to put in the disc every time I want to do some mapping.

I put Streets & Trips 2000 on my hard drive without doing what you'd have to do with Mapsource.

Thanks for this thread,, I was going to try a Virtual CD program to emulate a CD drive on my hard disk just for this purpose, I didnt think just copying the CD's to a directory and installing from there would work,,,, but it DOES !

Alphawolf: Mapsource Roads and Recreation for the entire US is on one CD ROm about 600M. Mapsource Topo comes in 3 Cd's the eastern states, western states and a third for Alaska and Hawaii.

 

I have the East and West on my hard drive about 1.2 megs. Since I'm not planning to visit Hawaii or Alaska anytime some, I'm saving the space

 

As an aside, I just got Delorme Road Atlas 2003 and it will automatically copy all the data you need onto you hard drive as part of the setup procedure. It's over a gig.

I assume you mean 1.2 Gigs? Could someone please explain the procedure for accomplishing this task? I would like to get Metroguide (West only) onto the HD. I assume I need to do an un-install first on my exisitng program? What about Topo? (Western U.S. only) Can this bee done with it as well? Careful now....speak slowly...you are dealing with someone who is very dangerous at the helm of a computer!

I did what SergJax said and it worked like a champ.

 

Alphawolf,

Copy the entire content of the first disk to the mapsource directory. If you did a standard installation it should be under c:program filesmapsource

 

Once you've copied all these files, remove the CD and run c:program filesmapsourcesetup.exe

 

If you have other CDs in the series, you simply copy the folder and its contents to the mapsource directory.

When I installed the new, well, it was then, European MetroGuide, it assumed that you wanted to install it on the hard drive. It only asked me about which regions I wanted to install, just in case I wanted to save some space on my hard drive. Western Europe was split up in six regions, so one could pick any combination of them.

 

But the previous MG Sweden/Denmark didn't work like that.
