idioteqnician
Hi there. I'm new to GeoCaching, looking to buy my first GPSr. I want to know how people think a Garmin 12 compares to a basic yellow eTrex. I get the sense that the 12 is better, no? What do you think a fair price would be for either if I'm buying used? I found a used Garmin 12 for US$90 and that seems like a good deal to me. Would others agree? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+PDOP's
If you haven't already go to the Garmin site and the basic outdoor products web page and then do a comparison of the two. The Etrex is smaller, uses two AA batteries instead of four and has a larger track log. The 12 has a larger screen with better resolution and more technical features. It all depends what you're looking for. PDOP's GPS Pages Quote Link to comment
Kerry.
There's nothing wrong with the 12 at the right price but take into account that they are basically superceded technology (actually several times over) when determining a reasonable price compared to more recent technology. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go Quote Link to comment
+EraSeek
I have a 12 and a map76. The 12 is an older unit, but is reliable and very tough. Also much easier to read the screen than the Etrex. That being said, Kerry is quite correct. Newer technology counts for a lot! As good as the 12 was, I'd always go for the newer (newest) unit. (well, maybe not the Geko). briancm
EraSeek, I've had a Geko 201 for a few weeks now. Great little unit: small, light, has an interface. It locks onto the sattelites pretty quick. Sometimes it takes a while to lock on to a WAAS signal, though. Quote Link to comment
idioteqnician
Thanks for the info, everyone. I was outbid for the Garmin 12, but your advice makes me glad for that anyway. Here's another little comparison: A new Magellan 315 for $95 vs. a fairly new Garmin Summit for $120. Or does anyone have a used GPSr they're looking to get rid of? Quote Link to comment
