Guest KF Quad Explorer Posted March 14, 2001 Posted March 14, 2001 does any one have comments on which one is better? I need to know asap Quote
Guest Quinnow Posted March 14, 2001 Posted March 14, 2001 I have a garmin III Plus and love the heck out of it. i find it to be very accurate and the mapping is excellent. The legend is too new for me to give any opinion on that would be fair. But in no way at all can you go wrong by picking the III plus. Quote
Guest KF Quad Explorer Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 I do have the III+ also, but I'm thinking on the legden because of its size and its new. I do agree with you that the III+ is a very reliable unit and I do love it. Just thinking about moving up to more memory and smaller size...... Quote
Guest Moun10Bike Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 Limited memory is to me the biggest problem with the GPS III+, but nevertheless I feel that it is one of the best GPS units out there. I am, however, picking up a Vista when available in order to take advantage of its 24 MB of internal memory (vs. the III+'s 1.4 MB). Any word on whether or not the new eTrex models will allow waypoint averaging? Quote
Guest KF Quad Explorer Posted March 16, 2001 Posted March 16, 2001 I know that the Legend doesnt do averaging. I bought one Yesterday and that is going to be one of the features I'll miss. Also what the heck is lock on road? Gary Quote
Guest Moun10Bike Posted March 16, 2001 Posted March 16, 2001 I'm not positive, as I've never had a GPS with it, but I think the "lock on road" feature keeps your positional icon "stuck" or "locked" to roads displayed on the GPS screen. It's for use when driving -- your position is always shown as the most "logical" road so that it is easier to navigate (your car isn't shown off in the bushes, etc.). For others uses, such as hiking, you'll want to turn the feature off. Quote

Gary It is a feature of some GPS units that have maps built in where it assumes you are on one of the roads. It keeps the position cursor displayed on the road unless you deviate significantly from the road. This tends to keep the tracklog smoother. However, if you're on and Interstate and take and exit ramp, it will tend to keep you on the main road for a while and then snap you over to the exit ramp. Guest EdwinOlson Posted March 16, 2001 Posted March 16, 2001 I just received my Legend from Amazon yesterday. It's terrific! Really small (considerably smaller than the III), reception seems okay (can't compare it to anything though), the screen is sharp. 8MB seems a bit snug for downloading metroguides, but I'm dealing (I get huge areas using R&R). Cheers! -Ed Quote
Guest tecmage Posted March 18, 2001 Posted March 18, 2001 Hi, My fiancee and myself used our Legend this weekend to search for a cahe out of state. I'm not sure about the lock on road, because we sure got off the road quick, and the icon followed! Richard Quote
