Guest Team JackQuest Posted March 17, 2001 Posted March 17, 2001 Does anyone know if there is third party mapping software out there that will run on the 12XL model? ------------------ TEAM JackQuest Jack & Cyber www.jackquest.com Base Camp N 40° 20.268' W 75° 37.969' (WGS84) Quote
Guest makaio Posted March 17, 2001 Posted March 17, 2001 When you say run "on" a 12XL, I assume you're referring to a background map displayed on the unit itself? If so, the answer is no. The 12XL (same model I have) doesn't support background maps. Matt Quote
Guest peter Posted March 17, 2001 Posted March 17, 2001 It would help if you were a little more specific as to what you want. The 12XL doesn't support true maps internally, so there is no way to display maps on the screen. However, you can make a bit of a local 'map' by creating a tracklog showing local roads and/or trails. For example, I made a tracklog of about 500 pts. that showed all major highways in the San Fran. Bay area. It wasn't very detailed or precise, but it would show me at a glance where I was relative to highways I knew. GARtrip (www.gartrip.de) and OziExplorer are good programs for doing that kind of thing, and also for managing waypoint lists and routes. OTOH, you may want to use your 12XL with a laptop running a mapping and routing program. DeLorme's Street Atlas has pretty good US maps and excellent support of GPS receivers. It will also upload the calculated route into your GPS for trips where you don't take the laptop along. You won't have the full map, but you will have the route showing on the GPS with all the places where you need to turn marked by waypoints. Quote
Guest Team JackQuest Posted March 18, 2001 Posted March 18, 2001 Thanks, you are correct I was looking into "background" maps just couldn't think of the term at the time. I suspected the 12XL didn't support it but just wanted to check. ------------------ TEAM JackQuest Jack & Cyber www.jackquest.com Base Camp N 40° 20.268' W 75° 37.969' (WGS84) Quote
