Sat signal position updating?

Recommended Posts

I may be missing your question but there should be a setting in your menu somewhere so that you can set your trail updates. I have mine set to update every second and you can go longer from there. That means that it puts a dot of my movement down on the map every second. Does that sound like what you are looking for? If so post what type of GPS you use and maybe someone can tell you right where its at.

Thanks I have a etrex legend and I know those settings are under track log setup. Do these settings control the update times? I understand it drops more (Bread crumbs) so I guess it would have to update the info as well? New to all this so I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. Thanks for the help all

The Legend updates its position every second. It tracks the satellites continuously, but only does the calculations to determine the position once per second. As far as I know there is no way to make it any faster or slower.

For track information, you can set the bread crumbs to drop as often as every second or as rarely as one per hour. These settings have no influence on how often your position is calculated and updated, just on the track log data.

A receiver's update rate/time is only as good (limited) as the hardware/software that's driving it.

Some units that spec 1 second updates (maximum) can have a hard time achieving "true" 1 second updates anyway.

There is a difference between the actual position update rate and the way these positions can be recorded. In recording data the data some units can be configured on a time or distance moved basis but this should not be confused with position update rates, which by the way some units can also specifically configure.

Cheers, Kerry.

An eTrex Legend actually has two different update rates, of its position.

Once every second in normal mode, once every 3-4 seconds in battery save mode.

The track log can be updated as often as every second, even in battery save mode. In that case, the positions in between measurements are predicted, from previous speed and heading. Qualified lying, if you wish.

Whether the unit actually can update its position every second or not, well, that's something perhaps only Garmin can answer. If they want to. At least their specification says so, and if you measure the current drawn by the unit, you'll see the there are pulsations at about every second. Which doesn't proove that it updates at that rate, but does indicate that it seems possible.

D'oh! I forgot that battery save mode slows satellite tracking and position calculations down.
