Naming waypoints?

I've had my GPS III for a couple months now, been using it mainly for scouting out hunting spots. With waypoint names being limited to six characters, I'm running into limitations on what nomenclature I can apply.

What tricks or workarounds do you folks use to differentiate between a series of similar waypoints? For now, I am abbreviating heavily, trying to keep the letters to four characters so I can have a two-digit number to differentiate up to 99 of a specific type of waypoint. I also utilize the "comments" feature of my unit to occasionally add a descriptive tag of up to 20 or so characters to the waypoint, although this info cannot be viewed until the user goes to the "edit waypoint" screen. Anybody have any favorite abbreviations that make sense and are concise that they'd like to share with the rest of us? Some four-character acronyms I use are clrg01 for clearing, clrc01 for clearcut, gdrp01 for gobbler dropping (substitute h for hen, b for buck), brub01 or srub01 for rubs made by an apparently large or small buck.

do you have different icons on the unit?

that could help alot, i use them quite often on the magellan 315 i have..obviously in your mind, you'd have to pick what some of them mean. there's one i always use for caches etc etc. so if you have all this stuff inthe same area, you could name it the same thing, but alternate icons for different meanings. some arent really versatile, i.e. car etc. say you pick something for clearinf, then you could number them to designate different clearings etc. or something...

i use geocaching.com's waypoint #'s (GC###) for naming waypoints in my gpsiii, that way all stashes are grouped together in the alphabetical waypoint list.

also i use the "golf course" flag symbol for stashes i have not found, and the "civil" flag for stashes i have found.

and like you, i try to enter all, or most, of the stash name in the comments field.
