+user13371 Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 Here are the maps loaded on my SporTrak Pro at the moment: The size of this map set is just under 30 meg (with no topo or POI data). How large would the same area be if rendered in Garmin's software, and which models have enough memory on board? --- LDR. Quote
+JamesJM Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 I don't know if this will help or not. I checked mapsource Topo and "WITH" POI and TOPO I can get nearly all of Michigan, JUST Michigan, in around the max for my Garmin Etrex Vista....24mb. Your area is considerably larger....I don't know how, or even if, it's possible to leave out some of the detail on the mapsource topo maps transferred to your GPS. Quote
peter Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 Using Garmin's Roads & Recreation, which doesn't include topo contours or many POIs, the area you showed takes about 24 MB. [The area isn't exactly the same since R&R loads by counties rather than rectangular areas, but it's pretty close.] This would fill the memory space of the Vista or 76S and would fit in an eMap with a 32 MB or larger card. Unfortunately R&R maps are even worse than MapSend's Streets and it doesn't look like Garmin will be updating them. They're more interested in keeping the more memory-intensive MG/CitySelect/CityNavigator maps updated. Quote
Neo_Geo Posted August 1, 2003 Posted August 1, 2003 eMaps and StreetPilots can handle up to 128MB of data. I don't think anything else can handle anything above 32MB. +user13371 Posted August 2, 2003 Author Posted August 2, 2003 Good info, thanks. Can you try another comparison? This one should be easier because it's a simpler box shape. In MapSend Topo for Magellan, I just made a region with corners at 44N, 86W and 42N,84W. It came out to 3450K with POI and TOPO data. POI data accounts for 29K, topo 139K. Without either (just a bare street map), the region is 3332K. How do the various Garmin editions stack up? --- LDR. Quote
+JDan150 Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 city select 4.01 is 10.3 MB 13,917 Sq-Mi Topo is 5.04 MB 13,917 Sq-Mi Metroguide 4.01 is 9.8 MB 13,917 Sq-Mi In order to git both points in on world map i had to select 2 regins World meg is 1 MB 177,702 Sq-Mi Quote
peter Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 Closest approximation for Roads & Recreation, which loads by county lines, was 2.9 MB. Quote
