If I am determining position by triangulating with my GPS, should the deviation be set to zero?

Deviation has to do with courses/headings/bearings etc and is used in the conversion between true and compass directions.

The deviation plays no part in a GPS determining a position solution.

Just as a matter of interest Triangulation is a common term used in GPS but in fact is not a correct term as by definition Triangulation has to do with angles whereas GPS positions are determined from measuring distances. Resection by Distance is a close description.

Cheers, Kerry.

If I understand you, you are using the compass on the GPSR to triangulate. My guess is deviation could be off or on, it should not make a difference, as all the bearings would be out (mis-oriënted) by the same amount. You should get the same answer.
