how to use shift on garmin venture

When I am naming my waypoints I would like to use the "&" symbol but it is grayed out, as is the shift key which I suspect I need to select. What's up with this? It would seem like I could select shift, then select the grayed out symbols. There aren't many of them, just that & and some punctuation.

You can not use lower case characters or certain other characters like the ampersand for naming waypoints, routes or tracks.

On the eTrex series, you're restricted to upper case A-Z, 0-9, the space, and the plus and minus signs for waypoint characters. Lower case and symbols can be used in other places, such as entering in the Owner Info, or calendar notes.
