+mrp
Well, which is the "best" largely depends on what you want to do with it. Reading between the lines I'm guessing that you're a recent retiree, and you're going to be RVing around the country. This means you might be looking for road navigation in unfamiliar areas. You might also be looking for something to take hiking and/or geocaching. Finding one unit that is best is difficult. Some of the trade-offs are size vs. screen readabilty, functionality vs battery life and expandibility vs features. If money is no object, you might consider getting a lot of different GPSRs for the different roles you want a GPSR to play. For auto navigation you might consider a garmin Streetpilot III, for geocaching there are lots depending on what features you value. I would consider a pair of Rino 120s if you want to have a radios with you. The Meridian series with a 128Mb card will have expandability to allow you to load large portions of the US into the unit without having to haul out the laptop. The GPSMAP 76 has a larger, easier to read screen, and the 76S has sensors which make it easier to use, but eat batteries. Probably the best all-around GPSR for roaming the country is the Garmin GPS V. I hear that the auto-routing is great, and it's small enough to take with when you want to go on foot. The screen is a little small to read when it's mounted up on a dash. The Streetpilot III has a larger screen (and voice prompts), but is a little large for carrying with you while hiking. So, if you tell us the different things you want it for, maybe we can recommend the best all-around, or the best for each role. -- Mitch (A.K.A Pneumatic) Quote Link to comment
