+TheCacheCrew
To be a little more focused than my last post... Can the GPSV generate an elevation profile on the fly? From previous articles, it sounds as though it cannot. Is this correct? Yet, with topo, the MeriGold can show your position 1/2 way up the mountain you're climbing?!?! I've scoured this site and the gpsinformation.net about topo issues and it's left me a bit confused. Elevation profiles aside, is there any consensus on the more accurate topo maps (G vs M). Actually, it sounds like some other 3rd party products may be better than both, but I guess I couldn't use those on either a GPSV or MeriGold? +elsinga
But: it won't display a graph of elevation on the V. You need Mapsource 4.07 for that. You can display your current elevation though. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org Quote Link to comment

Keep in mind that the topos are scaled down versions of 1:100000 maps. So, an elevation profile generated from them is going to be really crude. For example, the profile from Humber Park to Lily Rock looks like a steady slope, with 2100' of elevation gain. In fact, you gain 1200' over about .4 mile, then the rest in a couple hundred feet (it is a granite cliff). An elevation profile of where you have been will be much more accurate. Am I understanding you correctly that 4.07 will convert my track data from My Vista to a graph on the computer? Alan Quote Link to comment

Alan Starting with v4.07, MapSource will generate a vertical track profile from your tracklogs as long as the elevation data is there. MapSource is up to v4.08 as of today. http://www.garmin.com/support/download.html Quote Link to comment
