Guest JamieZ Posted January 6, 2002 Posted January 6, 2002 I've had my Meridian Gold for about a week now. When I purchased it, I intended to obtain a copy of MapSend Topo to load maps into my GPS. I even bought a 32 meg SD card in advance. Sooner than expected, I have seen the light. Now that time has come. I have decided to plunk down my money for a copy of MapSend Topo. I've done some research, and most of the useful information I can find is on these very forums. My many hours rummaging through posts and websites and pictures has come down to one very simple question. What is the latest version of MapSend Topo? I have seen version 3.00b mentioned as the new updated/debugged version. Is that still correct and current? What if I end up with a copy of 3.00a? Is there a way to verify (over the phone, or looking at the package) that I'll be getting the latest version? Thanks, Jamie Quote
Guest ClayJar Posted January 6, 2002 Posted January 6, 2002 Okay, here's what you do: Pick up a copy of MapSend Topo. If you happen to get a copy with a bad Arkansas, which will make it bug out when you try to make a region including Memphis, give them a call and they'll send a new disc right away (I got mine in less than a week). Now, if you have an SD card reader and have to have a map loaded before you get the fixed CD, let us know (there are plenty of us with good or replaced CDs, so somebody'll be able to help you if you happen to get a bad disc). Guest JamieZ Posted January 6, 2002 Posted January 6, 2002 Thanks CJ... (can I call you that?) I'll have to put my order in on Tuesday or Wednesday. Monday I'm taking an overnight trip to Pensacola, Florida to help a friend. I'm trying to talk her into hitting a few caches while we're down there. Jamie Quote

I've been meaning to head that way for some caching, since I haven't hit Florida or Texas yet. (I've hit LA, AR, MS, AL, GA, and TN, but it's been a while since I've been out of LA.) Quote

Guest JamieZ Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 How 'bout CJar? Anyway, there aren't but a couple of caches in the Pensacola area, and we don't have a lot of free time while we're there. I've actually printed up the cache pages for http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=2727 and http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=2389 which are both in Southern Mississippi. We'll be able to hit them on our drive back. When I brought up the Geocaching idea, her response was "Ok, but not anything too far." Jamie Quote
Guest nwjetboat Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 I recieved a merigold and Mapsend Topo for Christmas. I checked out the Little Rock area after reading a Clayjar post. I have a bad CD. I called tech support, they acted like they had never heard of the bad area. I even mentioned this forum. I have to send my CD back so they can verify that it's bad before they send me a good one. BTW, I've learned 10x more from this forum than from the lousy manual. Keep it up!!! Quote

It all depends on who you get when you call TS. I was fortunate to be able to get someone who was actually quite knowledgeable, but I'm sure there are others who don't give a hoot (can we fire them now? ). Quote
Guest infosponge Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 bought by Geocachers, it'd be nice if they acknowleged the importance of this community to their bottom line. Quote
Guest infosponge Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 I need to send a few copies of 'The Cluetrain Manifesto' book to the people at Magellan. Given how many of their products are bought by Geocachers, it'd be nice if they acknowleged the importance of this community to their bottom line. Quote
Guest lee_rimar Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 but excellent service. Re the Topo CD problem, I e-mailed them with a problem description and included a URL reference back to this forum. I received an email back the next day, saying a new CD was in the mail to me. Maybe I'm just lucky, but to me that's pretty good service. L. Quote

Y'know, I've heard a number of folks complain about Magellan's tech support, but the few times I've had any issues I've had nothing but excellent service. Guest Sojourn Posted January 7, 2002 Posted January 7, 2002 I called Magellan last Friday with my Topo CD problem and I didn't have any trouble. The Tech support guy knew exactly what I was talking about when I described the Little Rock zoom error. They asked for me to fax a copy of my purchase invoice and sent a replacement out today. Quote
Guest JamieZ Posted February 25, 2002 Posted February 25, 2002 Update: I just today got a working copy of MapSend Topo, but I have a new gripe. I got the package today in a suspiciously small envelope. Inside was only the MapSend CD in its case. No packaging, or documentation or anything. Anyway, I take the thing home and notice that the CD case is not shrink-wrapped, and in addition, when I open it, I can clearly see that this is not an original copy of the product. The CD has a paper stick-on label and has the familiar green tint of a writable CD. Is this how others' have gotten their replacement disks? I'm glad now that I didn't send back my flawed disk, otherwise I wouldn't have any of the packaging or papers that should come with this product. Bottom line is that I have a working copy of the Topo software, but the company sent me a copy of an original. Is that ethical? What if *I* copied their product? If I woulda known I was only going to get a copy, I could have just emailed ClayJar and asked for it from him. Anyone else have this experience? Should I be happy to just have a working version of this software and keep my mouth shut, or should I pursue this further to get a real CD? Jamie Quote
Guest Alan2 Posted February 25, 2002 Posted February 25, 2002 I'm not a lawyer but it seems to me that the owner can make as many copies of its own product as it wants. The own it! As far as the replacement not being "fancy" maybe they keep track of "sold" units in their special cases and this is the "best" and fastest" way to get out a corrected CD - but burning it right at the techs desk. Just a possibility. Alan Quote
Guest ClayJar Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 I've seen software that *only* came on CD-R with adhesive labels. It was very good, and very pricey, but to be sure that they always sent out a good version with the latest updates, they burned the discs per user. I wouldn't at all be upset that you got it on CD-R, and I'd be glad that it means that it can obviously be backed up onto another CD-R, so you can keep the original safe and bring the backup with you.
