MetroGuide Europe

I purchased MetroGuide Europe for an upcoming trip to Ireland. I knew its coverage there was limited and Ander's review pointed out the fact that the map detail is better when the detail settings are low. I found that what was displayed on the PC screen did not match the display on my eTrex Legend however. The areas in Ireland where there is supposed to be partial coverage were void of any detail except major roads. No towns, secondary roads, or railways. Garmin's customer service was very helpful in trying to determine the cause of the issue. Apparently Garmin assumes MetroGuide Europe users will have the European basemap. This is probably only an issue for the areas of limited coverage, i.e Ireland, Spain, and Sweden (?). The support guy was very sympathetic and I'm sure if I pushed the issue they would have taken care of me in some way. But I decided to keep it and get WorldMap as well. That way I'll have as good map coverage as can be expected. I plan on selling them on eBay when I return anyway.

But the coverage in Dublin looks terrific. I only had Topo before and the ability to find adresses is really convenient.

There is always a problem with MetroGuide maps here, if you don't have the European basemap. With the settings in my unit, as soon as I zoom out beyond the 8 km scale marker (to 12 km or more), nothing at all is shown of the MG map. The basemap takes over, and if that is American, then Sweden will be very white. One possible remedy to this problem is to download both the WorldMap and MetroGuide at the same time, covering the same area.

Thus, when you zoom out of MG, WorldMap will take over, so that there is something to look at in the display.

I have used the MetroGuide Europe in both Norway and Denmark with good results. or at least as good as the US Roads and Recreation for the US.

It definitely is not as good as using the digital military maps, but does beat hauling my notebook PC around in the woods.

Me to, even if the coverage in Norway is very small (mainly limited to Oslo and the immediate surroundings). I've been around more in Denmark, where MG Europe is very detailed all over the country. It's not that big, on the other hand icon_cool.gif
