E-MAP & MapSource Roads & Recreation

O.K......Roads & Rec. does not specifically mention the E-Map as a compatable garmin unit, but for the life of me, I can't imagine why R & R wouldn't download to the E-Map. Anyone have any experience with these?

Roads and Recreation will work fine with a eMap. Even with the smallest data card, 8MB, you will get a large area loaded as R&R was designed to work with the 1.44MB of the III Plus.

I have Metroguide and Roads and Rec. I get a lot more use out the R&R with just an 8 meg chip than metroguide and a 64 meg chip, unless I'm traveling and want all the exit information and address lookup.

I got the impression from some email comments from Garmin that they may have gotten complaints from people who used R&R with their eMaps that some of the features like address lookup didn't work right - quite naturally since R&R doesn't support those. I believe that's what originally led to the eMap not being listed as fully compatible with R&R.

It's silly now of course since the same issue exists with all their other new units like the Legend, Vista, etc.

I would say that the new MetroGuide is enough better to justify both the increased price and reduced area that fits a given memory size. R&R works fine, but MG is preferable.

Peter ... how much update on the roads is the new MG .... I have the old one ... and it's really bad in places ... some roads in NC that have existed 10 years prior to the release of the old MG don't show exist on the program (and these are paved state maintained roads and highways)?

The new MG seems pretty up to date in my area. Most developments here that went in two years ago are included.

You can always check an area you're interested in by using the MapViewer on Garmin's website in the MapSource section.

The new MetroGuide Europe 4.0 is updated fairly well, compared to the old MG Sweden/Denmark. And compared to what has happened in the reality, too.

But that doesn't say that they are doing the same job on you side of the world, of course!

I am new to this. What is on Metro Guide that isn't on R&R and vica versa. I just ordered GPS V with the info from Ranger Rick. Have not got it yet, but am thinking of getting additional software to go with it. One more question, should I just open City Select nationwide?

MetroGuide is considerably more detailed and accurate. R&R is based on the Census Bureau TIGER maps (also used by Magellan MapSend), and these were made without GPS accuracy in mind. MetroGuide is from TeleAtlas (formerly ETAK) and is made to be accurate for GPS-based auto-routing.

For your GPS V, a key difference is that MG will support its auto-routing function while R&R will not.

In addition, MG has a much more extensive database of business and other locations and supports additional search capabilities not provided by R&R:

- search for street addresses

- search for street intersections

- search for businesses and other 'POIs' by category.

The main drawback of MG relative to R&R is that it takes up substantially more memory.

As to unlocking the other CS regions, I'd suggest instead that you get the current MG. It covers the whole country (unlike CS which only covers key metropolitan areas in detail) and supports auto-routing both on your PC and the GPS V (and SP III). The routing is probably a little better in CS for the areas that it does cover, but I'd expect you to do fine with CS in your home area and MG for everywhere else.

Even if you pay for the full unlock of CS, you'll still need MG to fill in for all the areas that fall outside of CS' metropolitan areas.

Peter gave me the same advice on the Metroguide vs City Select additional unlock areas, it was good advice and I am glad I followed it! Thanks again Peter.
