USB cable for Magellan Meridian Gold

This will apply to almost any device that uses serial communication.

There are several manufacturers of adapters that allow you to plug a DB9 serial cable into a USB port. My personal preference is Belkin. Unfortunatly, these adapters run $30 or better.

Locally, check your local computer store, Office Depot, or Office Max. Online, Check CDW or some other major computer supply site.

As far as the Magellan could you not just make one for your Meridian, from a mouse cable, the same as I did for my 315?

Or what about getting a USB cable, cutting it in half, then cut off the PC end of your data cable, then splice the wires together. So long as you know the pinouts on both cables and use a continuity tester to ensure the bare wire to pinout on both units it should technicaly work.

This last idea should work on either unit, but I am only sumising here and maybe someone with more GPS/computer/electronic smarts could comment.

I bought mine from buy.com for around $25 shipped 6 months ago. Search there and Amazon.com and you should be able to find one for less than $35. Mine is not a Belkin…some off brand, I’ll find out if you’d like the name. Also search here for numerous other threads for usb to serial and you’ll find lots more info.
