+Scott Johnson
I have a new Magellan Platinum that is working fine. However, I have a question -- is this normal-- it makes a high pitched whine when on, especially if the back light is on. Also, there is a dark bluish spot on the screen. it almost looks like a shaded lake would on a map. It is about 1' in diameter. Quote Link to comment
+infosponge
The noise is normal...the high voltage drivers for the display make that sound. The spots...I haven't personally seen them yet, but I understand that others have and they're related in some way to sun exposure. Quote Link to comment
SergZak
The high-pitched whine is normal when using the backlight. This applies to Garmin units as well except for a few select models (that I know of)...my GPS V and GPSMAP 76S use a different type of backlighting (using the same type of LEDs used for backlighting on cell phones I believe) that makes no audible sound. AlphaOp
I noticed that too on the high-brightness setting on my Garmin GPS-3 unit. It's not very loud, barely noticeable unless you stick your ear up to the unit, then you can hear it clearly.
