Can anyone recommend good mapping websites and software, and also books that explain this whole datum thing and also give tips on how to navigate with a GPS and compass? A great book on the subject is "GPS Land Navigation" by Michael Ferguson, and my personal favorite mapping software is OziExplorer (http://www.oziexplorer.com) used in conjunction with USGS DRGs (see http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/drg/, as well as http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/drg/avail.html for a list of sites where you can download DRGs for free).
