SporTrak "Clamshell" ?

Recommended Posts

Looking at rebate coupon for a SporTrak receiver, I noticed a list of products and UPC codes that it was applicable to.

In addition to SporTrak "MAP" and "Pro" models, there was a UPC for something called a "Clamshell." After thinking about, I guessed this refers to the packaging, like the one you can get at Costco that comes in a plastic blister pack instead of a box.

But maybe I'm wrong -- is there another model SporTrak out there, with a hard "clamshell" cover that folds over to protect the face?

You're better off looking at the REAL price, without considering some rebate that you'll probably never get. Many companies outsource their rebates, and those companies are rewarded for finding every conceivable method of NOT sending you the rebate.

(10 months and counting for a $20 rebate from Motorola.)

Prime, is there anyone over there who tweak your nose, for going off topic so soon? I can't reach you from here icon_smile.gif

I wasn't talking about rebates (nor do I want to). I was commenting on an imaginary product design -- a GPS with a clamshell hard case. What would you think of such a thing?

This is, in reality, not true with Magellan's rebates. Not only do the rebates come through (albeit a bit slow) Magellan ensures they come through if there is a conflict and you can prove with copies that you are in the right. They do contact the third party to fix the problem. Beef all you want about the speed; mine took 4 months, but you can't beef about Magellan's positive responses to date when fixing a rebate conflict.

Cheers!

It looks like others don't share your opinion.

That may be true of Motorola, but I have three freinds that have gotten rebates from Magellan. As far as getting a real price :D It most cases the rebate brings the GPS in at less than the wholesale price, so you would be hard pressed to get a better price than a rebate unless you buy a used one. There is not a large profit margin in GPSR's, Having been a buyer for a GPS dealer, dealer cost on a Legand will be around $170.00 or $175.00

To get this back on topic and bump it back up again, I think a "Clamshell" GPSr is a great idea. Something that would fold over the face of the GPSr and cover any front buttons but still make the screen viewable, and make it possible to slip it into your pocket without hitting any buttons.

Unfortunately, the "joint" for a clamshell would be its weakness, and a point of failure:

(1) The joint itself

(2) The wires that run through the joint

I've had failures on the joints and wires that run through them on cell phones. Imagine the greater number of wires (and thereby less plastic and strength of the joint) that a GPPS would require.

I think you would get a better unit with maybe just a hinged cover. Removerable for driving.

That's pretty much what I meant. By "leaving the screen viewable" I wasn't suggesting putting the screen on one half of the shell, only leaving an opening or window of some type so that you could still see the screen.
