+bvgps
(Searched but couldn't find the info -- sorry if it has already been discussed -- would appreciate any links... .) When you use the cigarette lighter adapter with a Magellan 315 do you have to remove the batteries? The info that came with the cable didn't say a thing about how to properly use it. Does it make a difference if they are rechargeable batteries? Thanks! bvgps Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
You needn't remove the batteries, but it's not a charger. Note that the battery guage goes to "external power" when you dock it on the power cord. Quote Link to comment
+bvgps
Thank you! We know that with our scanner you are to remove the batteries when using external power so it had us wondering (an worried?). We use rechargeable batteries almost exclusively so didn't want to take a chance of ruining them. bvgps Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
I could bore you with the electronics, but the magellan cable is "either/or". The unit gets its power from the internal batteries OR the external source. The external source is never connected to the batteries. Reasons for doing this include not having to have the electronics of a "real" charger in the cable and liability in case the batteries leak or combust while inside the GPSr. So you're safe. Throw batteries in and just whip it in and out of the dock while you're driving (or at home with a 12v cigarette lighter or whatever.) Quote Link to comment
