Mapsource Metroguide - So many mistakes

I was considering buying Metroguide until I looked at the map detail window that Garmin provides on their web site. (I assume this is the latest map data used in their newest Metroguide version?)

But when I start looking closely at the maps, there are SO MANY errors,, roads and streets drawn where there really are none,, streets and roads with wrong names, schools mislabled, even city markers in totally the wrong place!

How could anyone depend on this software when there are so many errors?? I don't think I want to spend 100 bucks on a program that can't even locate city markers correctly.

Does everyone/anyone notice these types of glaring errors with Metroguide in their local area??

Just wondering.

Thanks

Oh one more thing, can anyone tell me if you have to have the CD in the CD tray for the software to run? I was thinking of using this on an old laptop that doesnt have a built-in CD.

I use Metroguide almost exclusively with my GPSV. I really haven't noticed any errors. I've used in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire on various business trips and cache hunts.

The only problem I've ever encountered is that once it told me to turn left on a one way street against the flow of traffic. Later I asked the clerk at the hotel I was staying in about it and was told the city had only recently made the street a one way.

On another occasion I was on Interstate 69 south of Fort Wayne, Indiana heading for a cache. Metroguide prompted me to exit on a cross road -- only problem was that there was no on/off ramp for that cross road.

But these are routing problems and not really errors on map details. I haven't encountered any errors in the areas I've used Metro -- doens't mean errors don't exist mind you. They just haven't come up.

Well, I guess considering all the other "street Maps" you can download to your Garmin (none...) I guess it's the best available! Show me a map...any map...without mistakes. Remember, this whole GPS/digital map thing is still in it's infancy. I guess someday we'll look back at the crude technology we are using here and laugh, but for now, I still think it's magic! I have all (yes...all) the Garmin map series, and while they all have their shortcomings, I wouldn't own a GPS that wouldn't accept them! I use them constantly, and just like my own mind, sometimes they leave me wanting a little bit more. Maybe it's the whole "is the glass half full or half empty" thing going on, huh?

You probably already know this but I thought I'd mention it for others that don't...MetroGuide does not contain the autorouting data that identifies one-way streets while CitySelect (both old and new versions) does. I'm assuming that's why it prompted you to turn the wrong way onto a one-way street. icon_biggrin.gif

I've frequently had MetroGuide route me on a circuitous path specifically to avoid going the wrong way down a one-way street.

I think the more accurate statement is that City Select and City Nav. have more complete one-way (and also turn-restriction) information than MG - not that MG is lacking it entirely.

It's fairly error-laiden in the area I live as wel (NE Florida), but it still appears to be the best of the options. To be fair, it's a growing area, and a lot has changed in recent years, but some of the problems/errors/mistakes are not at all due to that.
