Software for Garmin 12 + Laptop in the car

Is there any "free" software that can show me moving on a map in my car with my garin 12 hooked up to my laptop with the serial cable?

Practically speaking, no. There are some utilities that allow you to download maps from map servers. But you've either got to know ahead of time exactly where you're going (so you get the right maps), or download a huge number of maps, which wastes both time and disk space.

 

It's really not worth the hassle, especially when you can get Street Atlas 9.0 for $50 from Amazon.
