Linux/*NIX users and GPS software

Recommended Posts

I've got a few programs that work, but aren't really useful to me until I figure out how to mount my laptop in my car. Only problem is with all of them, it would be easy to accidentally corrupt your GPS since they don't have any security built into the service.<BR><BR><BR><A HREF="http://www.kraftvoll.at/software/index.shtml" TARGET=_blank>GpsDrive</A><BR><A HREF="http://www.mgix.com/gps3d/" TARGET=_blank>GPS3D</A><BR><A HREF="http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/" TARGET=_blank>GPSMan</A><BR><BR>Hope this helps,<BR>-W

Hmm...I was trying GPSman (I prefer graphical interfaces) but it doesnt seem to connect to my Garmin Quest very well (I use USB to connect).

Hi

I have a couple of explorists. These connect via usb and appear as a normal removable drive on the (k)ubuntu fiesty I'm currently using so I just copy files over. I also use gpsbabel, installed directly from the standard repositories, to convert the loc files from geocaching.com to magellan gs files. I'll do the same for gpx files when I pay up for membership.

For maps the magellan programs being m$ only are useless to me so I generated the detail maps once for the whole UK, directrouteEU and topoGB, using a friends windows pc and loaded them onto an sd card. A 2Gb card is easily enough for the whole UK plus loads of waypoint files.

Good luck with your gpsr whatever it is
