Recommended Posts

Guest searchingstella

New to the GPS thing. I think I am gettit a new GPS II+ for birthday gift. I WASN'T SNEAKING.

Anyway, what's it going to take to get road maps inside of it?

Is there a better GPS system to buy for road trips?

I think the Garmin III+ (not the two plus) is the first one that lets you load maps into it from your computer. You have to have one of the garmin map cd's to do it.

The regular Garmin III and the Garmin III+ already come with a basic roadmap package in the unit (major highways mostly)

I understand that the II+ does have pretty much the same electronics as the III and III+, just no maps....

In a few months the Garmin V will be out that will even figure routes for you and tell you when to turn. The ones that are out now, the Street Pilot series, would be good for driving directions but be pretty bulky (and eat batteries too fast) to be really practical to geocache with.

One that does the trick for me is Garmin Map 76.

has maps, 8Mb to load more detailed maps, floats, big display and uses only 2 AA batteries in stead of 4 icon_smile.gif
