Topo Software

I Started a search for what topo software to purchase and then thought, let me ask for some advice.

I have a GPSMAP 76 and a ETREX VISTA I use Mapsouce software for all other mapping features but want a topo map too. What I'm interested in is a detailed 3-d style topo map that I can lay tracks/routes on then print out.

Any ideas ?

I use the Maptech Terrain navigator set. It is the only map software I have. I reguraly use it to load waypoints and routes onto my Etrex Summit.

It has been easy to use and hooks up to the Summit with no problems.

Last summer I attended a seminar that was put on by Idaho state bowhunters and Bob Meredith who is the director of the Mountain Rescue Training Center. Bob had mentioned that he had almost all of the mapping software on the market and the Maptech stuff was the best not only in accuracy but ease of use.

If your already using Oziexplorer, they have an add-on program called 3D Oziexplorer for $25 that will do this for you. The problem with some of the commercial software such as Delorme's Topo USA is that they just don't have the detail and resolution of the USGS 1:24000 DRG topo's of which many are freely available.

I recently purchased DeLorme's 3-D TopoQuads. I got to look at the program before I purchased it, and it seemed pretty good. The major selling point was the 3-D aspect. Also, they were 1:24,000 which I wanted so I could map my property. Got it home, and started playing with it, and couldn't figure out how to download tracks, and waypoints. Nothing seemed to work. Sent an email to DeLorme, and they fired back an email to me the next day, as a matter of fact this went on for several days, and they always had a quick reply.

Bad thing is...I own a Garmin GPSMap 76S. Come to find out, they aren't set up for my GPS (along with several other units)! However the nice people at DeLorme told me that this isn't a big problem. I can just buy some other software, which will accept my GPS! Great idea, Lets see, $99.00 for orginal software, more software @$30.00+....Gee I can do that!!!

I DON'T THINK SO TIM!!!! DeLorme has a 30 day return policy which I'm going to take advantage of.
