Is Meridian (basic yellow or green) being discontinued?

Recommended Posts

I don't own any Magellan products so I could be wrong, but they'll probably continue to support it with firmware upgrades and warranty service well after it's discontinued. I wouldn't let it bother me.

The only thing I might let bother me is that Magellan may release a new and improved model to replace a discontinued one for about the same price. That'd be annoying.

Even so, it's a decent unit. If it's on super-sale someplace, pick one up.

Yes. I work for an electronics retailer here in California, and we sell this unit quite rapidly. After our initial order late last year, Magellan has informed us that we will no longer be able to get this unit, as it is being phased out and replaced by the Meridian Color. We have discontinued the unit as well in our stores. However, I would strongly reccomend this unit if you are looking for an expandable unit that is great for caching. The unit, street software and a memory card should be available for around $250 or less.

I'm not sure I understand this. The Green/Yellow model is the low end of the Meridian line; the Color model is the high end.

There are a couple of Meridian models in between (Gold, Platinum). It would make sense if they just dropped the low end model. It really doesn't differ much from the Gold, just amount of built-in memory and basemap.

I'm just not clear what you mean by saying it's being "replaced by the Meridian Color."

I puzzled over that, too. My take on it is that by introducing the color as the top of the Meridian line, the yellow/greens drop off the bottom and the Gold becomes the lowest level.

Not a shabby entry level, although I would presume it's going to be a good while before we see $99 Golds.

Often wrong but seldom in doubt

My apologies for not being clear. I understand that the color is the top unit. I did not mean that the color is a direct replacement, but is being introduced at the same time as the discontinuation of the Meridian basic.
