Capt'N Cache
Is there any GPS good software available that will show forest service roads and/or their #s for navigating new hunting areas? Will the MapSend Topo do the trick? Quote Link to comment
rgknowlton
Yes, on my GPS V with City Select (or on the Mapsource program), I can see all Forest Service Roads at about the 1 mi resolution. It has given excellent accuracy throughout the USFS roads I travel in Wyoming and Colorado. Quote Link to comment
Capt'N Cache
Thanks for your reply Bob. I would really like to use a GPS to navigate new hunting territory. Glad to hear that I can get down to that level of detail. Don't suppose it will give the Forest Service Road #s though huh? Take care! Quote Link to comment
+happycycler
Here in Missouri (Mark Twain National Forest) Mapsend Topo has some Forest service roads with numbers -- they call them county road 2345, etc. though. Quote Link to comment
+craggy (nightcrawler)
So far I yet to come cross a forest service road that does not show up on my gps. But not all of them are numbered, it just says it is a NFSR. Quote Link to comment
Forester II
Are there any good ones? Well, they are pretty good as is. I use the mapsend (streets) for work in the woods every day lately. For USFS roads in region 6 (Oregon and Washington) they should be real good for the two digit (forest highway) and four digit (mainline) roads. Where you will find numerous dicrepancies are on the spur roads (decimel numbered such as 6214.020 or 6214.025 for example). The road locations may not be in the data base or not accurate regarding length or actual location. Also these road numbers will not be in the data on your GPS. Also this data base will not show many roads on any private timberlands that are mixed into the National Forests of this area. I have to use current USFS engineering maps when working on and with these roads. The problem is that these maps often show roads that were never built. They will show existing blockages such as gates and tank traps though. Quote Link to comment
