+Go catch Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Hello, I’ve been caching since 2009 and never really got into the whole friends part of the game, although I have a few on my list. I understand that it can be useful for some and I get that. However, I was recently the FTF on a nearby hide by a new cacher and he instantly messaged to say thank you for being the FTF etc and can we be friends. We sent a few messages back and forth and I saw no harm in it so accepted. I then checked his profile and it appears he’s potentially only a minor and I’m now concerned if this is ok and what implications there may be. I don’t want to be seen as mean by removing him from my list if he is a minor, but I’m also concerned what people may think an older man may want by accepting a minor, whom I don’t know, as a friend. 1 1 Quote
+Sottiwotti Posted June 21 Posted June 21 I just see two people being geocaching friends. It's only weird when you make it weird 3 Quote
+Bear and Ragged Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Groundspeak terms of service does have a minimum age for account holders, and the need to be supervised by adults... 1 2 Quote
+Go catch Posted June 21 Author Posted June 21 As an update, someone did some digging and recognised the lad from another cachers profile. They thought it may be his grandmother, but turns out it was an auntie and I’ve reached out to them and they’re happy. The lad has been caching with her for a while and he just got his own account, but under her supervision, so she’s well aware anyway. 2 Quote

Hope you are both 'a good influence' on his caching! Quote
+fuzziebear3 Posted June 23 Posted June 23 The 'friends' feature of geocaching isn't really used much and doesn't have a lot of functionality, so I think there is no harm in being friends. Just a quick link to their profile page or to send them a message, which is all part of publicly available functionality anyway. Quote
