List of Oldest Active US/Canada Caches

Recommended Posts

I have poked around here for a while now without success. Does anyone know of a public (or shared) list that shows oldest active caches for each US state (& CAN province if possible) ?

I have links to some but oldest NM is archived and I hoped maybe there was a more recent list. Thanks in advance. (p.s. hoping the list has actual SD oldest, not the republished 2009 cache...)

I believe there's an error in this list. Indiana should be, AFAIK, Indiana's First, GC93, hidden on 10/23/00 rather than the slightly later Turkey Run Stash.

I think you are correct and have adjusted my list. I believe I excluded Indiana's First in the past because it was archived in 2002, then replaced and unarchived four years later. It was also moved significantly from the original location in 2022.

Those wishing to cover their bases, like me, will want to find both "Indiana's First" and "Turkey Run Stash."  As an added bonus, Turkey Run Stash is a much nicer hike.

The same is true in Ohio, where "Ancient Lake" has the oldest hidden date because of a typographical error by the CO more than 23 years ago.  (It should be 12/23/2001, not 01/23/2021.)  Many regard "Shawnee Lookout Cache" as the true oldest active cache in the state.  As an added bonus, Shawnee Lookout Cache is a nice hike with a scenic view at the end.

I've decided to add both caches for both of these states to my list with explanations for why each was included.

I keep a list of the oldest active in each US state: https://coord.info/BM57ETN

Burke Lake is not Virginia's oldest? By date it is. By GC it appears not.

Trussville Civitan - Alabama's First Cache is not Alabama's oldest? It's date is earlier and I believe GC126 is earlier than GC1A9. Odd.

Elvis Confluence was listed and available to find a couple of weeks before Burke Lake, but Burke Lake has an earlier placement date. That's the challenge with determining what should be considered oldest.

Trussville Civitan was not in my list because it was archived in 2003 and then brought back by a new owner in 2005. That eliminates it from "oldest" consideration by some cachers.

I've now added all of these caches to the list with explanations so that people can decide for themselves which they want to consider "oldest".

I figured that was why, and agree with you and others that some of the oldest caches in the list have a more tenuous claim than others. The only reason I mention it is because most challenges, etc. that require finding states' oldest just rely on the oldest by hide date, without consideration for this kind of circumstance.

As a future note, to find lists of a theme, if you can track down one that you know should be on that list, then look at the list-of-lists the cache has been added to. If you know GCBBA is Canada's oldest for instance, view the listing and see all the other lists it's in. You're guaranteed to find at least a few "Oldest geocaches in..." lists. For example.
