+Astrophotos44 Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Would it be ok to hide a cache on a rooftop only accessible by ladder or free climb? It would be a challenge and a rarity that geocaching does not see. 2 1 2 Quote
Keystone Posted April 24 Posted April 24 Do you have permission from the owner of the building with the roof? Does the party granting permission understand what geocachers will need to do in order to access the cache? Have you stated your permission (and any restrictions) on your cache page? If so, you may be good to go, provided that your cache meets all of the other Geocache Hiding Guidelines. 3 1 Quote
+arisoft Posted April 24 Posted April 24 (edited) I have found a cache placed on the top of a large building. I used long ladders to access stairs that goes to the top where the cache is with a view. It definitely was challenging and a rarity. These places gives you the feeling that you are not supposed to be there View from the GZ by night Edited April 24 by arisoft 2 Quote

That said, it's hard to imagine to get a rooftop cache published nowadays, unless you actually own the place. 2 Quote

But one local to where I live is a 10 foot tall concrete structure (old train track support) on a forest trail. It likely required about as much permission as the other caches on that trail. 2 Quote
+Astrophotos44 Posted April 24 Author Posted April 24 This would be one where I do not have permission. But i would have all of the info needed. I think only a couple people would go for it. Just a question. 2 Quote

+Goldenwattle Posted April 25 Posted April 25 (edited) They are not rare in Singapore, but I always had a lift to get me there. Also some part way up skyscrapers. It was in a stairwell and I wondered how many floors I had to climb, but I figured it wouldn't be many, as the CO also had to climb them. And it wasn't many. They also like to hide them under buildings in car parks, sometimes multistorey carparks. Singapore is a challenge when you aren't used to the local hides. There's a Virtual up there, but a lift too. 57 floors. I timed the descent. 15 seconds. Fast going up too. A physical cache in this roof top garden; of maybe ten stories, surrounded by taller buildings. Good café at ground level. Also found one on a roof top car park. Now, that was a challenge wending my way through corridors in the building. Interesting this. In the middle of a packed city there is a roof top garden with vegetable and flower gardens. There was a lift that opened to the garden. Just had to locate it. Geocaching, I saw Singapore differently to most tourists. Out in the suburbs with the apartment blocks, looking for lifts to take me above, searching empty lots, back streets, searching underground car parks, etc. I travelled all over the city by their great metro, as far as the Malaysian border, where I caught a bus over for the day (must tick off another country 😁), but the metro is being extended to there too, so it should become easier. Time consuming at present to cross the border and multiple buses. Love Singapore. Edited April 25 by Goldenwattle Quote

But what you're describing seems to not be what the OP was asking, free climbing or using ladders. I've found a cache in a parking deck (using an elevator). But it was not as nice as a rooftop garden. Edited April 25 by kunarion Quote

Ladders would not be long enough for many buildings. Would need to be only one storey, or maybe two at the most. People don't carry fire ladders for multistorey buildings. I have found several caches on roofs where a ladder is needed. Such as picnic shelter roofs, or bus stop roofs. The cache is very exposed to the elements though. Better under the roof, to keep it out of the direct sun and rain. Quote

Either plan seems like a very unique cache place. Or, yeah, cachers with fire ladders. Quote
+Astrophotos44 Posted April 25 Author Posted April 25 Yeah, 1 story. Ways you are a ladder and a thick steel pipe up the wall Quote
