+Rustynails Posted March 25 Posted March 25 MOGA 2025 this weekend is listed as a Mega event with slightly over 200 will attends. What now qualifies as a Mega event, 200+? 1 Quote

What now qualifies as a Mega event, 200+? I've only seen how one Mega Event was done. But it initially required counting attendees in a photograph. At the time, there was a firetruck brought in, the crowd picture was taken from the boom, then heads were counted to make it official. Once the magic number was counted and confirmed, the annual Event was granted Mega status. I don't know if there's a minimum thereafter, that is, how much the crowd may dwindle at a future date before it's no longer Mega, or if that happens. But a "Will Attend" is not a count of every family member and every friend that's coming, nor a guarantee that a particular family is coming at all. And "Attended" logs don't count everyone, either. Help Center https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=23&pgid=86 Quote New events (event candidates that have not previously been Mega) must receive 300 Will Attend logs before they are considered for Mega-Event qualification. The Event in question achieved Mega status previously. As I recall, there was a lot of buzz about logging ""Will Attends" for the Georgia Going Caching Event, with the info on helping it acquire Mega status. Even afterward, to assist with planning for a large crowd. I'm not sure all attendees were as diligent about the advance logs each year thereafter. Edited March 25 by kunarion 1 Quote
+NLBokkie Posted March 26 Posted March 26 (edited) It's a bit on the side, but I see something peculiar happening around here in Europe. There's plenty of events to choose from, but people tend to no longer send in "will attend" logs for these events. Instead they just show up at the event or send in a "will attend" just a few hours before the event. Reasons given for that are "to remain flexible", "to be able to wait for the last moment to see what we like to do", "not wanting to log for months in advance for Mega's / Giga's / Block Parties", "not wanting to dedicate attending the event" etc. Mostly understandable reasons, but only considered from the side of the attendee. Because all these reasons are making it harder for the organisers of the events to come up with a proper estimate in time on the amount of people to expect for an event, and making it harder for (wanting to be) Mega's / Giga's / Block Parties to come up with the number of logs to actually make it that party. This also makes that reaping the benefits coming with organising a bigger event come on a late moment in the event organisation process shifting more risks to the organisers. The value of an event is decreased so low that participating in events is not planned forehand anymore as it happened when threre was only few events in a year. 30 min time window is just too short. 2 Quote
