I don't know if it's the same for other EU countries, but in the Netherlands, you have to pay clearance costs and taxes for things you bought from outside the EU that's over €22. For gifts you pay clearance costs and taxes for packages that have a worth over €45. The clearance costs are €8 and taxes are 21% of the package worth.
