Hello, wanted to know the difference between and Travel Bug and a Travel Tag.

Usually a Travel Tag is a geocoin "companion"... but not always. A Travel Bug is attached to anything of your own choice and has a bug design on the metal plate.

Used to be a Travel Bug was those dog tag-looking things with the tracking code on it.  Like this.

A few other examples of what we call Trackable Tags Here...

Lately we see people calling anything trackable a "travel bug", and don't know why.

The registered trademark "The Travel Bug" has an official barcode bug symbol, and as cerberus1 mentioned, it's a dogtag shape.

Other tags are called travel tags or trackable tags.  All of these can be tracked the same, just like Geocoins.

Always learning ... I didn't know there was a literal difference between the terms travel bug, travel tag, or trackable, and I've been using them interchangeably since I started moving them around in 2017.  Mostly I use trackable or travel bug for anything that I log and move from cache to cache, or carry with me all the time for visits to caches.

Travel BUG is the term to use for the dog tags, then, and all those specialty trackables (Cache buddies, promo tags, Cachekins, etc) are travel TAGS.  I better start paying attention to what I am moving around!!

The terms seem to have evolved over time.  Some of the first Geocaching trackable items were called "Travel Bugs", for anything with an attached tracking code.  I found that frequently in early posts on these Forums.  But the registered trademark "The Travel Bug" dogtag is probably the one thing to call a "Travel Bug" today, because it's a very particular and recognizable thing.  So I try to use the term "Trackable Tags" (or travel tags) for the other fancier tags, especially because many finders don't seem to understand that those are Trackables (because the 3rd-party tags tend to have sparse imprinted info).  But sometimes I'm lazy and type "TB" when referring to any of them.

Now that I know there IS a difference, I will endeavor to be more vigilant in using the correct terms in my own logs and conversations.  But if the terms have "evolved" over time, as you said, trying to re-educate the masses may be challenging!!  No one has ever explained the difference as clearly as this thread has done, so it's likely no one in my caching "crowd" is even aware.  I wasn't aware there was a difference until now!!  Thanks to the OP, BettyBronco, for helping to enlighten us all!

Many logs (my own inlcluded) simply refer to bugs, or TB.  Left a bug, Swapped TB's, etc.  I suppose TB could refer to Travel Bug or TrackaBle item - I don't see Travel Tag used much around here.
