Hiding my first cache

Hello all. I am reading through the guidelines on hiding caches.  I have decided upon a great spot but according to the maps there is already a geocache in the area. I understand about the 528ft distance rule, however, that particular geocache was on signage that has been uprooted, removed, razed and fenced off for construction months ago. A geocacher noted this in the log with a DNF and a note long ago but somehow it was “found” a month later (even though the area is still fenced off for construction). I’ve already left a DNF and a note… should I forget about my great spot and move on? Or is there something else I can do? Would it help if I explain all this in the Reviewer Note? Thanks!

Until the other cache is archived, new caches within 528ft/161m of its location will not be published. If there's really a problem with the other cache, then a Note (or a Reviewer Note on your own cache) is not going to change anything. For details, see the Help Center article When a cache needs maintenance.

But note that if the owner of the other cache has disabled it during construction, and plans to reenable it after construction, and is communicating with the volunteer reviewers regularly, then the volunteer reviewers will allow the other cache to remain disabled indefinitely until construction is over and the owner has a chance to replace and reenable the cache. I had a cache that was disabled for several months because of construction, and construction delays, and more construction delays, and I was allowed to leave the cache disabled until construction was over and I was able to replace the cache.

I’d say definitely explain the whole situation to the reviewer, mention the construction, the DNFs, and maybe even snap a photo or two if you can. If that other cache is clearly gone and the owner’s not doing anything about it, the reviewer might archive it, which could free up your spot. But if the owner’s just waiting for construction to wrap up, you might have to wait it out or find another cool spot.
