New geocache series idea

Recommended Posts

I've seen a number of geocaches set at specific types of site for example:

Church Micro, Sidetracked .etc

I was thinking Gasworks! A forgotton industry that almost every town once had, In most cases they've been completely demolished and are now park land.

Given how important this industry was to urban development before the switch to natural gas and availablilty of electricity I thought it might be worthy of a cache series at the now cleared sites.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this and/or what is involved in its management?

Go for it!  You just have to hide and maintain caches (as you would for any cache) that honor this industry if it's important to you.

I hid a mystery cache that is about a series of fire alarm call boxes that are over 100 years old and still in use.  Though I wasn't allowed to use the name of the company in the cache page because of commercial concerns, as if someone is going to be swayed to buy a town wide fire alarm call system because of this cache.  Anyway, this is it if you're interested. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC85DWK

Before hiding your first cache, make sure you read all the Guidelines:

https://www.geocaching.com/play/guidelines

And that you understand the process of submitting your cache for review:

I was actually thinking more along the lines of placing one or two caches in the local area and allowing people to add more to other gasworks like with the church micro series

The series you're thinking of are mostly a UK thing I think, e.g. Church Micro, Sidetracked, Little Bridges, Village Hall, Village Signs, Curry Micro,  etc.
All of those have:

  • Someone to maintain the list of caches in the series, and issue a series number for each new cache.
  • A website with information, and a way to request to join, usually some finder statistics, and often some badges for reaching certain numbers of finds .

These require some commitment to the idea.

You could always go for a "light" option and just invite others to place caches with your chosen title in their name, like the "Off Yer Trolley" series, which doesn't have any maintainers, web site  or listings that I know of.

On the  subject of Gas Works, the series above are all centred around things that are still there (at least most of the time), so I know that I can go see a Church/Village Hall/Station when I search them out, whereas mostly Gas Works are all gone so there's probably nothing there now to provide any connection to the subject so the sites may be a bit underwhelming. The only 2 Gas Works I remember from my youth are now just covered over by faceless housing estates, and I reckon most people under 50 will have no idea where their local ones used to be and so are unlikely to be inspired to place one.

If you're on Facebook then I would suggest asking the same question on the "Geocaching UK" Facebook group, where I know some of the maintainers of the above series hang out and will probably be able to give you more specific help.

I think a Gasworks-themed geocache series would be a great idea! It’d give people a chance to explore the history of an industry that’s mostly forgotten now. I’ve seen similar projects in my area, like a series around old railway stations, and it was cool how it added a layer of local history to the hunt. Just make sure the sites are safe and accessible, as some old industrial sites can have hidden risks. Also, reaching out to local geocachers or forums for input might help with organizing it and making sure it fits well within the community guidelines.

Impressive that Gamewell is still in business after all these years, isn't it?

What are examples of “community guidelines” that affect cache placements?
