Raymond Duck Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Apologies if this has been discussed before, I have searched but couldn't find any mention. I use the paid OS Map app on my phone for walking/hiking and would like to add caches to the map. I have downloaded lists in GPX format from Geocaching.com but when imported to the OS app it kind of joins the dots between the all the caches and is unusable. I'd just like to see the caches individually and plan my own routes. Is this possible? Cheers, Darren Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Hi. I don't know that app, so I can't help directly. I do know that some caching apps can use Ordinance Survey maps. Well, one at least, Locus Map on Android; OS maps are available in the in-app store, and the app does caching extremely well. For a recent trip I did buy an OS map within Locus ... but decided I'd stop at one because I still like OSM better. But I know OS has dedicated fans. Hope you find a solution. Quote
Raymond Duck Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 Thanks, Viajero Perdido. I'll take a look at the other options. Quote

Viajero Perdido Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) Open Street Map, kinda the Wikipedia of maps. In recent years it's become the reigning map for trails, putting Google to shame, and in my quick comparison, looking better than OS too. But it's not a map, exactly. It's a database of map info, and many maps, the kind you actually see, are built from that data, all with different visual styles. Groundspeak's own map is based on OSM, but it's bare-bones, leaving out stuff like parking lots or prohibited areas. The Locus app's own maps are OSM, and those maps can be themed, checkboxes, show this, don't care about that... I think some of the other competing caching apps are built around OSM too. It's becoming everywhere. Check out openstreetmap.org. There are half a dozen map styles right there, if you expand the right panel. PS, there's even a fan of OS that's created a theme for certain OSM maps, to make the OSM data look like OS. Edited January 19 by Viajero Perdido 1 Quote
Raymond Duck Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Thanks for that, Viajero Perdido. I'm going to take a look at Locus App right now. Cheers. Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) Worth mentioning... While Locus has their own LoMaps (offline OSM) at a modest price, I slightly prefer openandromaps.org which are virtually identical at first glance. Donationware. Both are OSM with the hiking data turned on. The matching Elevate theme for OAM is my favorite combination. Happy exploring. PS, this is Locus with OAM (OSM), Elevate, and caches. (I'm one island over at the moment.) Edited January 22 by Viajero Perdido 1 Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Here's a UK example (near Ambleside), if you'd like to compare with Ordnance Survey. Tech details as above, except this time from my big-a** tablet, so it's a bigger image. Notice the trail density. This is where OSM shines. People walk a trail, and if it isn't on the map, they add it from their track log. Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) And just for fun, here's the same (OSM) data, same map file, but with the OS-like theme applied. (Tap for clearer image.) Edited January 22 by Viajero Perdido Quote
