+15Tango Posted April 20, 2002 Posted April 20, 2002 I've noticed some great auroura lately, and it makes me wonder--what effect, if any, does hightened solar activity have on GPS? I know accuracy is affected by the speed of transmission through the ionosphere--isn't that where auroura occur? Earlier this week, my GPS was acting a little squirrelly--taking longer to aquire, not being the most accurate bugger, etc., and I had attributed that to having my WAAS enabled, which seems to reduce my accuracy when I can't pick up a WAAS signal, but now I'm wondering if it can be due to hightened solar activity. Does anybody have any input on this? Thanks, and happy cachin'!!! 15T P.S.--everything seems to be working fine now--I was right on top of a cache this evening, and my GPS-r said 5 ft., which is the closest it's ever been so far. www.1800goguard.com Quote
Ridgerunner4 Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 mwmm15T. I've been having similar problems. See my thread Seeing Spots. Thus far, no one has responded (I'm kinda hoping some astro-physicist will chime in, with a solution...like wrapping aluminum foil around my head and hopping on one foot). If I hear anything, I'll let you know. I'm also doing a little research on the subject myself (simply layman type stuff). Quote

Kerry. Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 Solar activity (sun spot, solar flares etc) can as does geomagnetic storm activity etc but is also dependent on scale and is continuously monitored with different types of warnings as appropriate. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go Quote
