Guest prv8eye
After many weeks of reading and comparing I had decided on getting a Meridian Gold. The posts to the Groundpeak forums on battery life vs a built in compass and altimeter convinced me I didn't need an altimeter (I have two good compasses). BUT... for only $34 more it's hard for me not to go for the top of the line Platinum. Seems to me an altimeter would be a lot of fun. Can the compass and altimeter be turned off, saving the drain on the batteries?? Would I be better off getting the Platinum and some nickle metal hydride rechargables? Guest brokenwing
I think a bigger question might be: Are you willing to wait till December? The platinum has a release date of Dec 1st last time I checked. ------------------ http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching Quote Link to comment
Guest brokenwing
Another note: The Meridian Platinum DOES NOT have an barometric altimeter listed as a feature on the Magellan web site. They list a barometer only. It's unclear whether it will do what you expect with this data. ------------------ http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching Quote Link to comment
Guest ClayJar
Nice catch on the wording, brokenwing. It'll be interesting to see whether it is indeed a barometric altimeter or simply a barometer (which isn't at all useful to general geocaching). Now, as for which to get, I can tell you that I have already put in my request for a MeriGold, and I can think of no reason I'd want the barometer (whatever) or electronic compass. If I were myself, which I am, I'd go with the MeriGold and tack on eight AA NiMH cells and a charger. I picked up a cheap charger (with lighter adapter plug not AC wall wart) with 4 AA's for $15, and it's saved me a pretty penny in electric bills (for batteries, that is). Quote Link to comment
