In using Roas and Rec or Topo 8mb is plenty for what I need it for. You can download a lot of maps in your area and forget about it for a while. I forget off hand how many maps I have in there but it is a lot. Hope this helps.

I have the Rino 120 also, and the density of the roads affects the amount of maps you can store. Maps of New York City occupy far more space than Anchorage Alaska. For a simple comparison, I can get almost 1/2 of Arkansas loaded, roughly either Arkansas south of Interstate 40, including those counties or North of Interstate 40. Again, that depends on the density of the data you are looking at.

Even greater would be a way to save field notes from the Rino to the computer. All my notes were lost when I updated my software. I no longer use the note field for anything but temporary notes.

I have searched the manual and cannot find an answer to my question.

With the Rino 120 is there a way to tell how many waypoints you currently have stored and/or how many empty waypoint slots are available?

Thanks

If Wyle E. Coyote could afford all that ACME stuff... Why didn't he just buy DINNER?

Note that the address and phone number you register for your ULS (which is a universal tracking number the FCC makes you obtain before you can get any license) is publically available and can be searched for at the FCC site by your name (including just last name), call sign (which you legally MUST use whenever you first transmit on GMRS), or simply by license type and city/zip code (GMRS is license type ZA).

I'm curious if you found any notice of this when you applied for your license? I did not and was rather upset to learn this. I can understand the FCC having this information, and even having your full name and call sign searchable (so other GMRS users can check for intruder/pirates using bogus call signs)... well, anyway, I've changed my information to my work address and number needless to say. No, I'm not paranoid, but I don't want that info to be that easily found.

FYI, you can apply for the GMRS license online and pay with your credit card. The FCC's site is a bit cumbersome (requires Java and Acrobat to be working properly), but I managed to battle my way through it (took about 25 minutes).

You first have to get an FRN at the https://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cores/CoresHome.html site, and then use http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/ to submit FCC Form 605 electronically. Confused? I was too, even with this site listing step-by-step:

Oh, and don't bother looking at the "required reading," which is just about harmfulness of RF and really appears to me geared toward an engineer either designing a hand-held unit or installing a permanent station:

Section 97.13© RF Safety

Amatuer Service of OST/OET Bulletin Number 65

I should update that there is a lot of good reading at GMRS Web for both FRS-only and GMRS users alike. For instance, you are REQUIRED to announcing your call sign whenever you use GMRS frequencies. I'm planning to label this right on my GMRS units, so every in my family can remember it.

Also, I wouldn't recommend risking using GMRS without a license. Seems there are a lot of old-timer GMRS users out there who are FCC-nazis and will report "GMRS Intruders / Pirates" if you don't follow the rules. I mean, the law is the law, and all, but these folks are a bit extreme, IMHO.

I'm rather bummed to hear these replies. Basically, if you want an FRS radio w/GPS PtP, get a RINO. But if you want a GMRS radio, get a GMRS-only unit (especially since you'll get typically 2 - 5 watts).

Garmin really should have designed the units with at least 2 watts for GMRS. Secondly, they should have allowed using a secondary FRS channel to transmit PtP even when you've got the voice channel set to a GMRS frequency. Oh well.

The only channels the Rino will use the GRMS 1.00 watt power to transmit is on channels 15-22 only.

Channels 1-14 will transmit the peer to peer positioning using the .5 watt power output.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

The unit will only transmit on one channel at a time, so if you are set to a GMRS frequency your position will not be transmitted. You must be talking on one of the FRS frequencies for the position to be sent.
