Moss Trooper
The real low down, or is it High up on UK Topos fer yer Garmin Gps'ssssssss ( never know when to stop on the sssssss) Emailed Garmin today and got this back.. Thank you for contacting the GARMIN Europe cartography department. GARMIN has no imminent plan to publish any TOPO product for the European countries due to lack of available datasets. The GARMIN GPS units will only work on vector MapSource format. In general, we are able to easily convert most vector formats to MapSource as long as we have a reliable, complete and reasonably licensable data source. For Europe, topographic datasets are mainly available in raster format, some coverage may be available in vector format but the whole country would not be fully covered. Most important, the license cost for such data is still too high to allow us marketing a TOPO CD-ROM product for European countries. The only country were we are moving closer to reasonable license for topographic products is the United Kingdom at this time. However we are aware that there is a market demand for the TOPO product and therefore we are watching carefully what may become available by the various local geographic offices around Europe. If you are wondering why we do have a TOPO product for the USA: the answer is topographic data in the USA are for free. Thank you again for your inquiry. Moss de Boss... Sorta Quote Link to comment
BogBunny
Sounds typical of Garmin. They get the US topo maps for free, then charge an arm and a leg for the Mapsource CD's. It would be nice to have OS topo maps of the UK - they're so much better than any US maps I've used. Hey maybe that's why they're so cheap; they're so bad they have to give them away Quote Link to comment
+Whizz Kid
Interesting. This is at variance with what they told me. I had an email when I asked them some stuff about mapsource and tacked on the topo question that there would be a UK topo map by the end of '02. Left hand, right hand? Quote Link to comment
+Lassitude
Garmin are in negociation with OS regarding data format and costs. The only Topo maps in the pipeline are UK ones. It is unlikely that you will see them this year according to the guy I spoke to. If you want to pester them a bit here are their details.
