+jiggs11 Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Hi all. Just got my renewal notice - was charged $33.99 for a $29.99 yearly renewal. When I queried the Talking Heads at Groundspeak , I was told that VAT is added to my account....except that I'm Candaian, live in Canada, and have been a Premium member for at least 13 years, without paying taxes at any time. Just curious how many others have had this happen? Quote
+MNTA Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 No VAT in the US at least for now. Agh recently moved to a state with sales tax, unfortunately $2.61 increase from the previous year. My guess is you paid Canadian VAT. Governments are getting pickier and pickier about taxes and they must audit something now so GS is collecting it. +jiggs11 Posted November 28, 2024 Author Posted November 28, 2024 No, we have no VAT. The lackey who responded said I paid VAT was because Canada is part of the European Union (it isn't). I suggested he may want to check a map... 2 Quote
Moun10Bike Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 When I look at your account, in addition to the $29.99 base charge, I see a $1.50 Canadian country tax and a $2.40 Ontario provincial tax. So, it looks like Canada has started enforcing sales taxes on memberships. 3 Quote

French Guyana is just north of the equator; more like about 44 degrees south of N 49°. Quote
+Smitherington Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 I meant north of the equator. my oops. 4 degrees, not 49 degrees north. Quote

I'm from Canada and looking at my last bill, I see: Subtotal:USD 29.99 Tax:4.49 Total:USD 34.48 QST NR00000922; CA GST/HST Registration: 762924462RT0001 I believe Groundspeak is simply collecting sales taxes and looking back at my older bills, it looks like this tax collecting started in 2019. Your bill ($33.99) is cheaper than mine, so you must not be living in the province of Québec. Quote
+thebruce0 Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Yes, Canadians purchasing things from the US have started having to pay Canadian taxes. From what I've seen as someone who sells with a US website, the seller may, may, have the choice to either add the tax to the charge, or reduce the principle to 'hide' the tax, but that really depends on the company that's selling. As a seller in Canada using a US platform (another messy context), there's a form that the US platform may want you to fill out (W8-BEN) for their legal sake, which allows them not to charge tax with purchases charged for you, if it would be required, but states you claim that if it needs to be paid (ie, GST) that you will covering it so they're not accountable for it. It's complicated. Legal stuff sucks. But as a US company selling to Canadians, whether there's any way for HQ to continue to sell without charging the tax, I'm not sure. And I believe it is the Canadian gov't that's enforcing this on US companies. IANAL and this is just my understanding; no guarantee I'm 100% correct 1 Quote
