virtual geocahe - leave nothing but footprints take nothing but photos -

is the geocaching future virtual ?

anyone else concerned with the proliferation of caches in natural locations around the UK or world?, caches which could be seen as litter or a hazard to wildlife?

recently back from a trip to western ireland where I thought to leave a cache on the Blasket Islands... but that would have been leaving something unaturalal in an amazingly natural setting ... even though the cache would have been a 5/5

making me think again about the whole geo cache thing - so maybe the future is virtual, adpting the old saying "leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photos",

MMMmmmm, sounds like going into a buther shop and preaching vegetarianism. I agree, there are some places that should not be touched. Being that this planet is for our (human beings) use, WE should not abuse it, but "hands off", no way.

How many caches does it take to clutter a landscape? Being that they're 'hidden' and even to the point of needing a GPS to find them. I say that 'outlawing non-vertural caching' is extremist. icon_eek.gif

As a grandfather of 3 young cache chasers, i would also vote against the virtual only, it would be no fun for my young familly not to get some trinket, It is quite a good way of getting them into the countryside.

I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPERTUNITY TO ASK PERSONS TO STOP TAKING THE KIDS STUFF FROM MY CACHES AND LEAVING A LOAD OF OLD TOT I thank you

I have some sympathy with the idea but it dosn't match our experience. It may seem now that the geocache is the only manmade thing spoiling a natural environment, but it is rarley true.

Having cached through the winter when the foliage has died back. I can say that there is an awfull lot of rubbish out there and most times you can find a lot of manmade stuff, none of which is the cache. In most environments the cache is the thing with the least impact. After all I havn't noticed Dartmore being recked by the huge numbers of letterboxes on it.

Though I have noticed that you can get quite a lot of undergrowth damage where people have tramped about looking for the cache - but surley this is no worse than if a few animals passed through the area.

The real value of caching is that it gets people out into the countryside where they notice the state it is in and maybe do something about it (cache in - trash out).

There is, I guess, some skill in finding a well-hidden cache without flattening the undergrowth in the general area. I'd say it's a skill worth developing. The less impact my search has on the area, the better.

I do so agree with the sentiment that there is skill in not damaging the environment in our hunts. Apart from trampled undergrowth I have found damaged walls. Maybe not Geocachers but prime suspects.

As for finding litter, I had quite a conscience for not having taken along a bin bag when I went on Tiger Hunt - I could have started a definitive collection of crisp packets and building material!

As for virtual v. traditional caches I believe that each has its place. Personally I am quite happy to have found the right spot even without some goodies to swap, but when my granddaughter is old enough to come along I will hope to give her the thrill of opening some tupperware and swopping some toy or other. I've already raided her toybox!
